Why don't they patch the ID to something inconspicuous. Have it so it launches with the name of a genuine game. Then it would be a little more difficult for Sony to trace.

Exactly, you'd think they'd do that :S Not only will it be harder to trace, that really can't ban you from booting an app titled Ratchet and Clank, can they?

Sony could probably check firmware version if you try to play on PSN (or go to the store) and block you from these services until you run the update

Sony already does that. I haven't updated my PS3 since the removal of OtherOS and I can't go on PSN or the PSN store.

I called it as soon as I heard about the exploit! You're right though, it was fairly obvious, but within minutes of the announcement me and jeffro were talking about how it was possible in the IRC and we hit the nail on the head straight away. Custom micro-controller exploiting the jig code in the PS3. Lo and behold it was true.

Sadly, I can't port the code to arduino since the arduino doesn't have USB controller, it's merely serial converted to USB, hence why you need an FTDI driver for it to communicate with a computer. Arses.
