Well I feel better that you guys aren't finishing shooters in a week. I don't think I'd have much fun swapping games so frequently though. These games take an investment of time and effort to get good at.
noiseredux, you should try Axelay (SNES) if you haven't. Every other level is vertical, the rest are horizontal. Both types of level are very well designed. I need to get back to that one too. I played it a lot last winter, I was able to get to the last level fairly often but only made it to the final boss once or twice.
What shmup are you playing now?

MUSHA on the Genesis and Space Megaforce on the SNES are two great vertical shmups by Compile. If you include Sega CD there's Robo Aleste, also by Compile.

Firepower 2000
Flying Hero is a great cute em up, Japanese only
Imperium is ok if you find it cheap
Sonic Wings is good, but get the cheaper Japanese import, not the ridiculously rare and pricey US Aero Fighters
GEN:
Dangerous Seed Japanese only
Fire Shark

Been playing a little Gundemonium collection... Pretty damn hard and weak music to boot, but I still enjoy it..

The Genesis has more shmups than any other system except for the PCE. I was playing Steel Empire before the tourney started and it is pretty fun.

Re: What shmup are you playing now?
how many of you guys/girls can actually beat shmups? besides aegis wings on xbla, i have never ever beat one.
if you took a shit, please put it back
Re: What shmup are you playing now?
I have few beaten under my belt. Shmups are like any other genre, there are the easy games (Arrow Flash) and the hard games (Thunder Force II).

I have got a 1cc in a few. I need to spend more time with some because I would like to increase the number. I would like to go back to Raiden III. I was doing alright before on the highscore board over at shmups but I was only getting to stage 5 if memory serves but It has been over a year since I played it. I love highscore threads for the motivation that they provide. Kind of why I suggested a forum for that here, I only know one place(2dgaming . net) that maintains one for games other than shmups.
Re: What shmup are you playing now?
I've 1cc'd Death Smiles on Level 1 and Raiden Fighters Jet (but not the good path). I can get to the end of MUSHA and Blazing Lazers but both kill me near the end, and it's hard to recover from losing all the powerups (though it isn't as bad as Gradius).
