Shinobi was quite amazing. I never actually beat it because it was so hard and then my copy got broken so I have to track that game down again some time but other than that it was amazing. Don't bother with it's sequel Nightshade. It improves the gameplay but everything else goes downhill.

Also, RESIDENT EVIL 4! Best game Capcom ever made (Though God Hand is close second).

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I also support the recommendation of the Megaten games. Personally you should start off with Persona 3.

I may just have to try Shinobi... I love the Genesis games and the Saturn game. The PS2 game looked pretty good.

Shinobi
Shinobi sucked.
I thought Shinobi was good, maybe a little too challenging for some but overall good.
Challenge, more like bullshit. I never got past the first Stage 3 boss*. Damn regenerating health. Also, why can I not just cut those sword-wielding dogs even when they don't block my attacks? I'll just swing at the dogs while they're just standing there or are in the middle of doing something other than blocking and my attack won't do shit*. (I really wish I had footage of this) You remember The Karate Kid episode of the Angry Nintendo Nerd when he rams his head into his cabinet? I did something like that, except with my foot. Thankfully, it was an easy fix.

*If you know any strategies, please tell me. I've been thinking about giving this game a second chance, but then I remember the dogs.

I own quite a few PS2 games. I'm a big fan of the lesser known games, so chances are you probably won't have heard of most of these. They're all worth a look though.

Adventures of Cookie & Cream - do you have a girlfriend, sister, female friend or gay roommate? This game is a great casual co-op experience with a charm girls seem to love.

Arcana Heart - An all-girls fighting game. Quite good, very Japanese.

Castle Shikigami 2 - A manageable bullet hell shooter with the world's worst translated skits. They might not be Engrish, but goddamn do they not make any sense. Youtube some of them and prepare to die from laughter.

Contra Shattered Soldier - 2.5D Contra game. Hard as hell, but it's Contra. What did you expect?

Disaster Report - Survival Horror game unlike any other. You're not surviving a zombie infestation, you're surviving being in a city that was just struck with a 6.0 earthquake. It's so different from anything else you'll play its worth owning.

Fatal Frame 1, 2 and 3 - These are actually rather scary survival horror games. The first two were ported to Xbox 1 and look better, so I'd recommend the Xbox versions if you can get them. if not, they make a good trilogy for the PS2.

Gitaroo Man
- One of the best PS2 rhythm games. Did the music game genre a heap of good WELL before Guitar hero.

Gradius V - SHOOT THE CORE. This is the pinnacle of all Gradius games. It's rather amazing in every way.

Heavenly Guardian - The spiritual sequel to the old Kiki Kaikai games (Pocky & Rocky), Heavenly Guardian plays just like those classics. It can be found very cheaply too. AVOID the Wii version. The controls are TERRIBLE.

Ico
- Keep your fingers crossed this will come to the PS3, but if not get it. It is simply stunning.

Katamari Damacy - Shame on you for not owning this game! This to me is the PS2's killer app. It's why I bought a PS2. Quarky, fun, unique, bazaar. No PS2 collection should be without it.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection - Contains Megaman 1-8 and both arcade games. The PS2 version features the enhanced music from the Japanese PS1 Rockman Complete Works ports. Those cost a pretty penny. This collection does not.

Mega Man X Collection - Contains Megaman X1-6 and Battle & Chase, the Megaman kart racer. Get your weapons ready.

Metal Slug Anthology - Contains all the Metal Slug games in one place. The PS2 version is where it's at. SNK will live on in our hearts forever.

Monster Attack - You'll need to import this one from Europe and rip it, convert it to 60Hz and then burn it, but it's well worth the effort - this game is Earth Defense Force 1. I wrote a review of it. Check it out. http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2010 ... ck-review/

Global Defense Force - Again, Europe only, rip it, convert it, burn it, play it. EDF 2. EVen better. Review here. http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2010 ... eview-ps2/

Raw Danger - The sequel to Disaster Report. This time, survive a city that's been flooded. Only get it once you try and like Disaster Report.

Red Ninja End of Honor - an action game where the kunoichi shows her panties more often than even Katsumi of Dead or Alive. Amazing.

Red Star, The - An oldschool style beat 'em up Shmup combo. It's just as awesome as it sounds.

Resident Evil 4 - Better than the Gamecube version, features more shit to do and unlock. One of the best Capcom games ever if I do say so.

Persona 4 - Not as deep and confusing as P3, P4 is more enjoyable as it's like an interactive anime. This is my favorite RPG on the PS2.

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology - It's Street Fighter Alpha 1-3, 2 Gold and Gem Fighter. If you remember awesome times playing the alpha games in arcades, on the dreamcast, or even the saturn, then track this baby down.

Tales of the Abyss - The only Tales of game that I really REALLY got into. Sure I played through Symphonia and part of Vesperia, but this one just struck me the right way. Very fun action RPG.

Taking just titles I own that I haven't noticed other folks mention yet...

Clock Tower 3
Echo Night Beyond
Ghosthunter
Grand Theft Auto...well, there's at least five of these on the console, so if you like them, go for them all.
Gungrave
Haunting Ground
Indigo Prophecy
Mark of Kri
Mercenaries
The Punisher
Soul Calibur 2
Viewtiful Joe

I have a lot of those, but I don't recommend recommend what I don't see as at least an 8/10. Gungrave is an interesting game, but it falls flat when it comes to verity and control. I also tried to avoid multi-platform games as usually, the PS2 version would be the worst.

Not being aware of what other consoles he had, I figure I'd offer suggestions for the PS2 of titles I enjoyed regardless of what other ports they might have had. And just because you don't think some of these rate highly doesn't mean I don't or he won't. I'm more than happy to offer him an experience he wouldn't necessarily have been told about from others.

As for Gungrave, sure it has those issues. Then again, so do a lot of games. Dsheinem can't stand the controls in Ico, for instance, and I've never felt the extra content on the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 made up for the load times. Plus I actually kinda liked using the GC controller for it. But to each his own, we can only offer titles that he might take notice of and hope he researches them a little to see if they're what he really wants. He may despise everything we've both mentioned.

I don't believe it's been mentioned yet but I'd like to suggest "Okami" since it's a Capcom title from the defunct section of Clover Studios which is now know as Platinum Games. Anyhow, that's a good one that you should definitely own for PS2 unless you have a Wii and rather have it on that.

Since I saw mention of Shinobi, why not give "Nightshade" a shot as well since it's part of the series.

Otherwise I believe those are some titles that haven't been mentioned yet.

The best PS2 "Game" to get, HDAdvance-HDLoader.
