SSaturn Internal Memory , replacing the Battery question
Re: SSaturn Internal Memory , replacing the Battery question
I wouldn't recommend trying to replace the battery with the system on. You touching the battery and the board could cause an arc of electricity and fry your whole system.
Unfortunately if you remove the battery your game saves will vanish.

Re: SSaturn Internal Memory , replacing the Battery question
Actually in the Saturn's instruction manual it says you have 15 seconds to replace the battery before all your saves go kaput so just have the new one ready to go in as soon as the old one comes out. Think of it like changing the batteries in a universal remote. Doing it quick will keep all your remote codes or in this case, Saturn game saves.
Also, DO NOT touch the little button next to the save battery if you want to keep your saves as it's the reset button to clear the whole RAM chip inside of the Saturn. It's only there for in the event of corruption or any number of glitches that could possibly occur over time from surges, power spikes or finicky cheapo batteries as they go dead and can sometimes prevent your Saturn from starting.
If your Saturn is working perfectly fine without any memory problems then leave the button alone and simply replace the battery. Remember to use a CR2032 battery from a good company (IE Energizer, Duracell, some other pricey well known brand that will cost you $2-$5 for a battery), it pays not to use generics or cheapos (Rayovac, Dollar Store etc...). These can short out, have extremely small lifetimes of only days and generally play mayhem with your Saturn and wreck your saves.

I really would suggest on getting some kind of save cart be it action replay 4 in 1 or an offical cart. given the nature of the system memory it really is good to have a back up. Then you don't have to try and play mcgyver when you need to replace soemthing.

All he has to do is pull the battery out and put the new one in to keep his saves. It takes two seconds tops so he'll be fine.Mendoza wrote:I really would suggest on getting some kind of save cart be it action replay 4 in 1 or an offical cart. given the nature of the system memory it really is good to have a back up. Also, save carts don't allow you to copy all of your data. Some saves simply cannot be moved off of the console due to limitations in the way a lot of games game handle data on the system.

I had a Saturn for years and years before I got round to buying a memory cartridge, and I never once lost my saves. As long as you take out the old battery and replace it straight away you shouldn't lose your saves at all.

Ah I didn't know the manual says you have 15 seconds (as I don't have one) but I should of guessed since most things with a battery save will hold on to the memory for a short period of time.

Re: SSaturn Internal Memory , replacing the Battery question
Just to save confusion, not all Saturns have the little light blue button. I have a model one that has it, a model two that you can see the spot where it goes on the board with "SW1", and another model 2 where there's black plastic completely covering the board except for the battery slot.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: Also, DO NOT touch the little button next to the save battery if you want to keep your saves as it's the reset button to clear the whole RAM chip inside of the Saturn.

True you don't have to have a cart to save stuff, even long term, but it will fill up quickly if you have a lot of games, or just a couple hogs like Dragon Force.
