I haven't played Mana Kehmia yet, so I can't make a comparison, but Valkyrie Profile 2 and Tales of the Abyss are some good 2D RPGs for the PS2.

Klonoa (ps1) and Klonoa 2 (ps2) are quite fun treasures that are missed on.
