nope it's peer to peer. So basically, you are paying 50$ a year to get a VERY gimped version of what PC gamers get for free for over a decade.

I can understand M$ logic. Make as much money as possible with as little effort as possible. Economics 101. But what I don't get is why fanboys defend that decision.

If Valve can provide Steam for free (they make up for the server cost with sales from their store, which should be true for Microsoft as well since the XBOX has an online store), why can't MS, and WHY do people pay for it?

I was between getting a PS3 and a 360 and the fact that I had to pay to get online play and early demos (and the free stuff companies make from time to time for their games) pushed me into buying a PS3 (well that and Valkyria Chronicles and LBP), despite it being 100€ more expensive at the time.

People pay for live because of the convenience. Do you know how difficult it is for the average user to set up a ventrillo/teamspeak server for cross-game chat? In a lot of games playing online isn't as simple as hitting 'quick match' and it shoving you into a game with a bunch of people the same skill level as you. That's that people are paying for, simply being able to fire up XBL and jump into a game within seconds.

I own both a 360 and PS3 and play both on their online services. Xbox Live is a much better, and polished service compared to PSN. PSN is very anti-social, which to me is the complete opposite of what a gaming service should be. Is XBL worth £26 a year? Yes, I can justify that cost because I need to pay it to play with my friends. A lot of the time, it's the only time I get to interact with them, especially now since I've moved home. Don't forget that you get discounts on games every month which helps alleviate the cost somewhat.

Don't get me wrong, it does irk me somewhat that MS charges for P2P play, but compared to playing online on a PC, for some reason, I much prefer XBL.

um dude.... steam games have voice chat. You just press a button and talk. The skill matchmaking depends on the game keeping stats of how good a player is, I don't think it has anything to do with XBL. I really don't understand how social and online gaming fit together (I've already covered this in the topic about local vs online multiplayer).

XBL might be better than Playstation's system, but it is nowhere near as good as pc online services, which are free, that is my main point.

I know how PC gaming works. You don't have to tell me. I'm saying that for the laymen, XBL is infinitely easier to use. That's why they pay for it.

Regarding the social aspect, I mean that for me, XBL is more social, I'm able to join party chats and talk to my buddies regardless of what I'm doing on the xbox. I can't do that on the PSN. Hell, it's a pain to just to send a message to somebody on PSN. The service feels tacked on. Sony need to get rid of the awful XMB. The vast majority of people don't even talk on PS3, and even then, it's through some god-awful £5 bluetooth headset they have no idea how to set up properly, so all you hear is a lagged version of the sound coming from their TV/little brother/dog barking/washing machine/sirens/gunfire/etc.

To quote Jesus, "Chatty bitch should get on IRC if he wants to talk"

When I'm actually playing a game I like to focus on what I'm doing. In WoW I'd be on our guild's Vent server, but if were actually doing something like a dungeon or raid it was all business; the random bullshitting would be when I'm grinding, which was about as complicated as breathing. So being able to talk to my buddies across games is completely undesirable for me.

Also, Microsoft loses points for giving everyone an easy-to-setup microphone. On the PC there is just enough of a barrier to entry (have to go out and buy a mic, then set it up) to be able to voice chat with people (and I'm only talking about games with built-in chat) that you weed out most of the idiots.

That's just you though. I know myself and all of my IRL friends like to just party chat over whatever we're doing. The fact that I can't do that on the PS3 really bothers me and is one of the reasons that I'll only ever play it if nobody else is playing on 360 or I really fancy playing some Uncharted 2. We've joked about it a few times, saying that we should just put the 360 on for the party chat and go play something on the PS3 at the same time. Just so we can chat whilst outside of a game.

True. But none of my friends own a PS3, and I will always have a problem with paying for stuff other people give me for free.
