Oh thats right, huh? They didnt give you any rings on that stage.
Yep, although Metal Sonic is perhaps more difficult than this part (I don't remember). I also forgot if one needs to go over Metal Sonic every time we lose there, but I don't think so.
I can't remember how the rings thing plays out exactly, but I think I still spent more time with the Death Egg than Metal Sonic. Death Egg might be easier once you know how to approach it and time the dodging and attacks though.

Since that is a new stage, you start with no rings and there are none to pick up, Metal Sonic has to be defeated every time but he's easy once you know his pattern

I just loved how his weak spot was his crotch. That was just perfect.

I seem to remember a quote from the strategy guide in Mad Magazine.

"When all else fails, attack the groin. That'll teach him!"

It's been a while since I've played the game that far, but couldn't you hit him in the belly as well?

It was risky but it could be done. But if you were Knuckles in Sonic 2 & Knuckles, not a chance. He cant jump that high. He also has trouble hitting the crotch. I dont think I ever beat it with him...

That one screenshot shows all that could be awesome if sega would get back in touch with thier audience. Makes me so so happy and so very sad all at the same time.

He never has at that point :(

That scene is probably my absolute favorite of my gaming life.
That was so intense for as an early teen.
AGREED 100000% top ten gaming moments ever for me.

did anyone notice the numbers on the score and time? 1965-9-17. stage select code :)

Yeah metal sonic seemed to have a really small hit point, although I dont think it took that many hits to kill him.
If the robot robotnik killed you - you had to do metal sonic again.

if you jumped just right you could get in three hits on his head as he was charging up for the dash or whatever. you have to hit him right in the forehead though because his spines will kill you.

god i could talk about the genesis sonic games, especially sonic 2, for hours and hours. favorite series ever.

Nice find! The code was long forgotten in my mind.

Also this was a great scene, but pretty much everything from Lava Reef and afterwards in Sonic 3 & Knuckles is absolute 2D perfection to me, and trumps this scene. I got the shivers just seeing the Death Egg wedged in the ceiling in Lava Reef. That was a great little touch.
