Ive heared the later models had a thinner PCB. The one Im looking at is one of the last models as it has the most recent box revision.

The reason I dont want the 4in1 is they no longer have the comport on top and the gameshark does.

If you are looking for an ARP with the comm port, you might want to check with http://www.collectorscardsandgames.com/ ... aturn.html . I bought mine from him last December, and asked before I bought if it would have the comm port. He might still have a few of the older ones left.

As far as your original firmware question, I can't help you there. I never looked into that at all. Sorry :(

I've never heard of that before. Why even take the chance?

So just make sure you get one with the port on top.

So found this thread and just to clarify, the box for the gameshark in this ebay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-SEGA-SATURN-GAM ... 2036wt_911

reads: "Includes 4 Meg of Back-Up Memory"

Now from what I understand from reading this thread and several others, this is just "backup" memory for game saves and such? It is not an extra 4MB of ram, it just happens to be a coincidence that the backup memory size offered on the gameshark is that same size as the RAM.

No, the GameShark does not have video memory. It can only back up saves. And the exact phrasing of that is important. You can not save directly to the GameShark from inside a game (like you can with a regular old memory card). You can move saves to and from the system memory only.

The Action Replay is a much better option, since it can do everything the GameShark can do and more.

That phrasing is important, thanks for the clarification!

Action Replay is definitely on my list of Saturn accessories to get. I got an extra saturn from the thrift store that included a gameshark and I guess I just wanted to know how useful (or useless I guess) it was.

I recently got a Gameshark in a Saturn bundle and I don't even know if it works. I don't even want to test it. Just looking at the pcb, it's twice as thick as all my other official/unofficial Saturn carts.

Classic gaming sega style has great prices as well on the AR+ and mod chip.

I'm another one strongly suggesting you pass on the gameshark. I've owned 5 only one worked for over a year, 3 were doa. I've used the same AR cart since 2004.
