Questions about modding an original Xbox

Post by brunoafh »

I've become interested in modding an original Xbox. My main goal is to be able to play Japanese Xbox games. There aren't many Japanese Xboxs around, although there is one on eBay now for 150. I don't know a thing about modding an Xbox, but I'm guessing you can. I am hoping I can mod a US Xbox to play games from different regions or to be able to play CD-R. Can anyone assist me on this?

Well, not all mods will allow you to play games from any region. But how do I go about modding the Xbox? There's a chip I assume, do you know where I might acquire one? Once you mod the Xbox do you know if it can play Japan-only games for sure? What about CD-R? I'm willing to do any soldering or tinkering inside, as I'm not bad at doing that. If you could give me the lowdown on the entire subject, I'd be really grateful.

Soft modding it seems to be the way to go.. I've soft modded mine a few months ago and I love it! It runs my emulators and roms, bypasses the DVD lock-out, and runs XBox games right from the hard drive, so I see no reason why Japanese games wouldn't work as well..

This link should get you started on the right path - http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=215055

If you can't find the info you need on that website, or how to do anything to your XBox, then it pretty much can't be done - it's a great resource!

I wasn't even aware of softmodding, this seems like a good way to go. Thanks a lot.

I can rent you a softmod kit.

You can also TSOP flash the XBOX and add a bigger HDD.

Most XBOX will not read CD-Rs but all read DVD-Rs as long as it it an XISO format.
You will need Qwix to make an XISO. Some emulators will only work of the HDD example KIller Instinct.

Japanese Xbox units are not rare, and you should not pay $150 for them. I paid $100 for my Japanese limited edition Kasumi Blue Xbox, and even that was a bit more expensive than usual.

Seriously, either buy one from your region and mod it yourself or buy a premodded one from someone near you. Both will cost you less than $150.

If you want to get into Japanese Xbox games, I highly recommend Shikigami no Shiro Evolution, Metal Wolf Chaos, Tenerezza and Petit Copter.

Metal Wolf Chaos is actually my motivation for modding an Xbox. It looks like the game for me, and From Software is my favorite developer. I'll try softmodding one soon.
