I'm pretty sure if you turn it upside down to play the discs it does wear out the bottom gear eventually and you'll end up with a PS1 that doesn't play right-side up or upside down. So no matter what you'll end up replacing some parts .

Yeah, that's why Playstations make me nervous (don't know about 3, though). I've had a PS1 wear down (and my local Goodwill has like 6 Playstations in at any given time, and almost all of them have this problem as well), and my PS2 is already losing its ability to read PS1 games, so they're starting to seem fragile to me. I'm still hoping for a slim someday.

Anyway, I recently dug out my old PS1 as well, and it was having some major skipping problems (regular music cds play fine btw). Knowing that the major problem tends to be with the laser, I picked up a new one from Richspsxparts and installed it without a hitch... Only to find it still skips like a bastard. Do new laser assembly's typically need pot adjustments? Or is there something even more wrong with the old grey beast?

Originals (both import and US, it's a modded system), in addition to, well, less than original. All of them skipped equally. Nervous about POT adjustment as it's not something I've really messed with before, though logically I guess it can't get any worse. Worth a try

I was thinking of a dab of thin paint across the surface of the pot to mark it. And it's not just the video. Bust a Move 1 and 2 have massive skipping in the music during the game, and NBA Showtime does the same with commentary. The games themselves load at what seems to be a normal pace, and there are no problems with the gameplay itself.
