I'm browsing the forums over at psx-scene.com and there's a post that states the first PS3 modchip has been released. It's a USB stick that doesn't require you to open your PS3.

See the thread over at: http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64935

However, I'm still a bit skeptical of it.
PSX Scene wrote: PS Jailbreak is a USB plug and play solution that installs in seconds, keeping your valid warranty seal in tact.

Easy to use installer and GUI takes you step by step.

Compatible with all production models FAT and SLIM. Supports all regions: USA, JAP, PAL and KOREA

PS Jailbreak disables forced software updates and will never brick your console.

Supports all games (it does not allow backups of bluray movies , dvd movies , or past consoles games)

Backup games to your internal hard drive or external hard drive through USB, and boot directly off GUI. Eliminating the need for expensive blueray burners and costly blank media.

Play backups off your hard drives 2x as fast as off the blueray drive. This eliminates lags and glitches to provide you with smoother game play.

Open up your console to a new generation of homebrew applications. Load homebrew apps/games off any USB hard drive/flash drive.

Fully updatable with new features/updates by connecting PS Jailbreak to any computers USB

I saw this earlier; I really hope that it's not a fake, since the PS3 has been begging to be hacked for ages.

It's almost certainly not. It's demoed byozmodchips, who are fairly reputable. However, the price they are charging seems insane for what the device actually is.
(It is certainly not anywhere near $170 worth of anything)
But, people will pay the asking price, so more power to them (and if they don't, the price will come down so us mortals can afford it).

If it is legit, then it only takes one person to buy the damn thing and they will pirate it and release it for free. Just like they did with the memor32 hack for the PS2.

I'll buy it when it hits the $50 price mark. Anything more just feels like a rip-off for such a small device.

Looks like the psx-scene.com forums are back up and running. Earlier they were down to the heavy website traffic and had to move to new servers.

The latest news show that there are reports of PS Jailbreak modchip clones coming out next week.

There are a few more testers with videos of showing how it works so it seems more and more legit.

It will be interesting to see what Sony's response will be and how PS3 hardware/software sales are affected.

Personally, if it weren't so bloody expensive I'd have one. I'd order this today, no hesitation. To be honest, I can't see it taking long for somebody to reverse engineer the trickery that makes this possible and release it for free for everybody.
