Had to go with SM64, mostly because it's the only one I've ever gotten close to beating. I'm not a frequent completer of games (I think I've beaten less than a quarter of the games I've played). :P

I am a huge fan of SML, though. Lotta nostalgia with that one...

Also, someone should make a separate thread for the handhelds.
1) that isn't really a Mario game, it's the first Yoshi game.

2)But you put a DS title in the poll. New Super Mario Bros Wii (oooouuuuu)

seriously Super Mario Land 2 is, if not the best, in the top 3 of all Mario games. But very few people seam to have played it, that's why it doesn't get the love it deserves.

Video game sites always forget that game when they make a top 10 of Mario games. Goes to show how unfit video game reviewers are to be called journalists, since it's obvious they haven't played as many games as they think, when they make lists like that.

Umm ZeroAX, New Super Mario Bros Wii is a Wii game; New Super Mario Bros is the ds game. I also agree with noise, I like Super Mario Land a tad bit more ;)

I'm gonna have to go with Super Mario Land 2 as well. I've played the original, and I just don't understand the amount of praise the game got in comparison to the second. Land 2 had so much variety amongst the levels and so much personality.

I've played every Mario game as they were released (gettin' old), and my absolute favourite of the bunch is still Super Mario World. Doesn't matter how many times I play it, I'm as in love with it with each successive playthrough as I was the one before. (I've even played through most of the hacks out there, just to satiate my thirst for more Mario in the same style. :p)

However, if I had to pick which was the best platformer of them all, I'd pick Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. That game is just platforming perfection, and not many games since have come close to creating anything similar.

All my opinion of course. I love all the Mario games, but the SNES captured me unlike any other.

I'm guessing you played the 2nd first? If you had played the first first -- ie when it was first released -- you probably would adore it. I think it's just how it is. Those of us that played SML1 as a launch title ended up playing it A LOT, memorizing it, and loving it.

I was joking that it looks like a DS game, but the sarcastic ooouuuu doesn't translate good to written word.

and noiseredux, taste will be taste. I can understand some people liking Land 1 more. But still I think the gameplay and level design (and level themes which are amazing) are much better in SML2.

Mario Land 1 was based on Super Mario Bros, Mario land 2 was based on SMB3 and SMW. It's only logical that gameplay evolves over the years.

I did...but not to protest, out of sincerity. My fav Mario by far (to be fair, ive not played either Mario Galaxy). Mario 64 was so revolutionary and complex (at the time), that folks expected to be completely blown away, so SMS, had unrealistic expectations.

Taking off on the Mario 64 game, they improved graphics (obviously), camera angle much easier to control on the fly. The FLUUD device was revolutionary in it's own right. The underwater boards and controls were fantastic. The Yoshi only quests were incredibly hard to figure out w/out a cheat or online faq. But the best part of all of course, is the mini boards in each world. A simple platform board, 3d-360 w/classic music. Just plain fun...and many were excruciatingly hard the first few times. I absolutely love that game...and will proudly say so. Sometimes were (the collective were is being used here) being trendy by bashing it. It is a great game, perhaps if you hated it 9 years ago, give it another go now?

Guess what. A site went and made a top 50 of all Mario games.....and Super Mario Land 2 isn't on the freaking list. W T and F. They have DDR Mario, they have the 2 football games, a basketball game, 2 tennis games, they have freaking Tetris and Punch Out which only had small cameos of Mario, and no Super Mario Land 2?

The people who wrote this suck, cause in 1992 they couldn't get their head out of the console wars, to see what excellent games the gameboy had.
