Burnt discs are perfect, especially if you're going to live in a dorm.

I lived in the dorms my first couple of years in the Navy. It's a pretty comparable situation to a college dorm.

Five words for ya:

Everyone is a F*#king Thief.

Bring the burnt games. If they get stolen, so what? But if you have anything even remotely valuable and non-traceable (like video games) and you end up with a sketchy roommate (or a roommate with sketchy friends) and you can count on your stuff 'disappearing'.

Bring the burnt games and wait to bring the good stuff till you have a place of your own or share an apartment with a friend.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'm going to collage soon as well...but this got me thinking maybe i should just bring my dreamcast instead of the ps3, just because the loss of something isn't as great...but I'm hoping i can work out stuff with the ps3. luckily my dorm mate is a friend from high school and i trust him quite a bit.

Just bring a modded X Box complete with some Emulators/roms, add whatever X Box games you want to play onto your HD, (provided there's room,)
and there you go...
A utopia of gaming at your disposal. No need to worry about burnt CDs, disc-theft, and you might just impress somebody with the fact that you have a veritable arcade in your room..
Just be sure to go out on Thursday - Saturday nights..

Sorry, dude, but you're not going to have to worry about any of this. I've notified the authorities and they'll be picking you up shortly. Btw, they won't let you take any consoles into a supermax.

My roommate and I always had several consoles hooked up. At one point freshman year, we had PS2, XBOX, GC, DC, N64, and SNES hooked up. We had a blast. Video games were never a problem with social life. You have so much free time in college that there is time for everything. Just stay on top of your school work and don't let that catch you off guard.

I back-traced this and I'm reporting it to Cyber Police.

I don't think it'll be a problem at all. What if your roommate has burnt copies of movies? Or downloads movies or music without paying?

Your roommate couldn't say anything!

I lived in an apt last year but by myself when I was in school. I only brought my PS2 and SNES I think... just cuz I didn't want to bring alll my stuff and have to move it all back.
I also brought all my handhelds though.
It never got in the way and actually I guess I was way too busy to even play. I only played when I had company over... how sad.

I rocked the 360 and that was it. Having netflix onhand was great, especially since i was a film student at the time, but if that isn't a big deal for you, i wouldn't bring one, I'm sure one of your neighbors will have one anyway.

Otherwise, I'd recommend the good old n64. It's sturdy, it's cheap, it's nostalgic. You'll get guys and girls to play it and it's always easy to make some good old fashioned drinking games to bond and Mario kart. In other words, you'll be a hell of a lot more social with it than anything else.

The DC is nice on paper but it's hard to get other people to play games outside their comfort zones. I've spent ages trying to get my friends to play powerstone 2 or MvC 2 but for the most part it falls on deaf ears. With the N64, most everything is familiar to newcomers and it'll be alot easier to slip in the unnoticed gems because of it. I don't think Bomberman 64 ever got the attention it got on floor 8 as it did anywhere else in the world, and all that i had to do was slip it in after a game of goldeneye.

Also

Keep your shit that matters hidden. Getting shit stolen sucks, obviously, but when it's your roomate or hallmates, it only gets worse. It's better you lose your crap then spend your time hounding at potential friends because you lost your precious copy of wetrix.

If you can get out of your room, go for it. One of the worst things I did in Boulder was let some social anxieties get the better of me. The rooms nice to unwind and relax but there's bound to be other things to do if your up for it. While I drank and played games with my friends on my floor a crap ton during the week, I could have been out joining clubs, flirting with girls, and doing various acts of vagrancy, but instead I puttered most of these off to the weekend. These are always more fun and the more out there you let yourself become freshman year, the better. Everyone's in the same boat as you, so meeting people is just as fun for them.

So, there's some thoughts there, considering I just went through the same thing last year, I figure this could be useful. Also, where you headed?
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Bring either a DC or a modded Xbox. Seriously. My DC and modded Xbox were the only things that ever got played. When the 360 launched I bought one (yay student loan) and nobody even cared about playing it after a couple of plays on Perfect Dark Zero or Project Gotham Racing 3. We just went straight back to the MAME emulator on my xbox. Hilariously we played more games of ISS64 on the xbox than anything else in my first year at university.

Oh yeah, and don't bring ANY real games. Just make sure you have all backups. You can't trust anybody. Plus they're just going to get damaged. College/University students will treat your stuff with the same level of respect as a 2 year old. I'm not kidding.

If you download a lot of stuff, make sure you download EVERYTHING you're going to need for the time that you are going to be there because you're not going to be able to download off the college network. If you can, then you risk being kicked out and fined. Not worth the risk. Do what I did and set up a VPN back home with a little crappy PC just torrenting all the time, plus you can use it to browse the internet without restriction or play games online. I just got my mum to burn a DVD with the shit I wanted and got her to post it. Never had a single problem doing it that way.
