final fight cd wrote:not only is the saturn a over hyped machine, but so is panzer dragoon saga. i get the impression that people form preconceived notions about how great the game is solely because it is rare/sought after and damn expensive. it is like the cd-i zelda games. a minor internet celebrity bashes the games and soon everybody and their mom says the games are terrible even though probably 50% of them have never played one.
hypothetically speaking, if the panzer dragoon saga was ported to the 64 and ps1 i guarantee it wouldn't get the praise that it does. and therefore, the saturn wouldn't get the praise that it does.
That's completely unfounded. I bought Panzer Dragoon Saga in 1998, about a year after I bought Final Fantasy VII. Panzer Dragoon Saga absolutely blew away my expectations, in a time when I was enamored with RPGs. Don't try to devalue the opinions of gamers simply because you don't see eye to eye with them. The
only criticism that I have with the game is its length, which is only born from the expectations I've garnered from other RPGs.
Beyond that, considering the massive drought of RPGs on the N64, if they somehow could have made a four CD game work on cartridge, the game would be near the top of every "best N64 games" list.
Neilencio hit the nail on the head. Calling a system a "major" system admits that it was successful, even if it was a financial blunder. People are so quick to flaunt the N64 for Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, but just as you said about CD-i, people criticize the Saturn because of what they
haven't played. How many people that criticize the Saturn have played Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Saga (or the other two Panzer Dragoon games, which are great rail shooters), NiGHTS, Shining Force III, Dragon Force, or Saturn Bomberman? How many of them have ever delved into the expansive world of imports (which is great for more successful systems like Super Famicom and PlayStation as well)?
The Saturn was certainly on the bottom of the list of least successful mainstream systems, but in terms of games, it was at least equal to N64 when considering only U.S. releases. Include imports and it stands among the best.
