But my next question is "Why are you all freaking out over an article posted in 2008?"
:P
Yeah, its a bit strange, but so is the fact that we care about systems from 10+ years ago at all. I honestly just found the article a couple of days ago. To say were all a little late to the party is an understatement.

I think most of the rage, mine at least, is not from saying it had problems, which it did, but from the assertion that its the worst. Yes it was expensive, yes its internal memory was a pain, yes sega botched its launch and then left the system to die in the US, and yes it wasnt the system of frat boys.

No i haven't played Panzer Dragoon Saga, but i have played and owned several of the games on the various lists people have put up and some of them are as good as people make them out to be. Guardian Heroes is the best beat em up of its time and probably ever.

That and the shear lack of research and knowledge of the guy just rubs us the wrong way.

final fight cd wrote:not only is the saturn a over hyped machine, but so is panzer dragoon saga. i get the impression that people form preconceived notions about how great the game is solely because it is rare/sought after and damn expensive. it is like the cd-i zelda games. a minor internet celebrity bashes the games and soon everybody and their mom says the games are terrible even though probably 50% of them have never played one.

hypothetically speaking, if the panzer dragoon saga was ported to the 64 and ps1 i guarantee it wouldn't get the praise that it does. and therefore, the saturn wouldn't get the praise that it does.
That's completely unfounded. I bought Panzer Dragoon Saga in 1998, about a year after I bought Final Fantasy VII. Panzer Dragoon Saga absolutely blew away my expectations, in a time when I was enamored with RPGs. Don't try to devalue the opinions of gamers simply because you don't see eye to eye with them. The only criticism that I have with the game is its length, which is only born from the expectations I've garnered from other RPGs.

Beyond that, considering the massive drought of RPGs on the N64, if they somehow could have made a four CD game work on cartridge, the game would be near the top of every "best N64 games" list.

Neilencio hit the nail on the head. Calling a system a "major" system admits that it was successful, even if it was a financial blunder. People are so quick to flaunt the N64 for Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, but just as you said about CD-i, people criticize the Saturn because of what they haven't played. How many people that criticize the Saturn have played Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon Saga (or the other two Panzer Dragoon games, which are great rail shooters), NiGHTS, Shining Force III, Dragon Force, or Saturn Bomberman? How many of them have ever delved into the expansive world of imports (which is great for more successful systems like Super Famicom and PlayStation as well)?

The Saturn was certainly on the bottom of the list of least successful mainstream systems, but in terms of games, it was at least equal to N64 when considering only U.S. releases. Include imports and it stands among the best.

I guess it depends on your idea of what worst means. If he meant worst in the sense that it pretty much did sega in, then yes, it was probably the "worst" in terms of helping sega.

It'd be easy to say his reasoning wasn't that at all, but it seems that that's where his thought process started. After deciding that it was the worst in terms of how it took down a gaming giant, he had to come up reasons to validify that point. Basically the opposite of proper journalism where your research leads to an opinion, he instead formed an opinion and then tried to make the facts fit that opinion. Kind of like Fox news.

Actually, I think if it ended up on the N64, it would get twice as much praise. The N64's rpgs included uh. . . quest 64, paper mario, and. . . .harvest moon 64?

Speaking completely objectively, anyone that calls Panzer Dragoon Saga "crap" is out of their fucking mind. I can't rule out the possibility of someone not liking it, by under what pretense could someone call it "crap"? That sounds like someone with an axe to grind.

I think this query merits its own topic.

And Ogre Battle 64 if you want to count tactical stuff.

There's also Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage. I have it, but haven't played it yet.

Oh, and I guess some might count Shadowgate 64, though I guess it's more of an adventure game.

Wow people have torn that article to pieces. To brush the whole console off as a failure is rather ignorant thought.
