Buying a Saturn, Advice?

I've looked at a lot of the articles about this system on the site and thought a lot about when i had the system, but I still have a few questions.

1. Besides being easier to mod, are their any other advantages to the round button model 2 system.

2. I've seen some systems with a switch installed on the back to toggle Japan and US regions. Is this a good mod to use, and if so how hard would it be?

3. As far as price for a system on its own (all hook ups, but no games or extras) what do you think is a fair price?

4. What is a good paper to use for making replacement covers?

Any other advice would be appreciated. Want to make the most out of my second run with the system.

Almost forgot, I plan on using the 4 in 1 action replay for importing.

1. model 2 controllers are great
2. if you are using action replay this mod isn't really necessary. you can also patch the region of the backups when burning the disc
3. I've seen them go for around $30 in my local comic/used game shops. I'd check craigslist..

Definitely check out the Saturn guides here on Racketboy. to get the most out of your saturn, you must import. The modchip and action replay is what I use, and it's highly recommended. snesorama.us has a really nice Saturn Master list if you are gonna check out some backups. jdownloader is crucial when using that site

I don't quite feel right using back ups so i guess either model will do as long as i have the cart.

Wait until you see that all the games you really, really want are hovering around $200.00. The back up idea may sound better at that point. Great system though and I think every retro gamer should pick one up.

Yeah PD Saga is not looking too inviting at the moment

Thankfully i still have my disc and manual for Dragon Force. I have the manual for Guardian Heroes but no game or case. Now i just have to find someone with the game and the case, but no manual.

I looked at snesorama and couldn't find the link to the list of Saturn games.

I'm a Gamer first and Collector second. Just think of backups as "renting" the games, a try it before you buy it situation.
it's also a good for what it's supposed to be used for, keeping valuable real copies of games in good shape

I believe he was asking about the model 2 system, not the controllers. If you were implying that the model 2 controllers only work on the model 2, I can vouch for model 2 controllers working on a model 1 system.

Just thought I would clarify in case that was confusing anyone else.

I was not. I was just saying the controllers that came with the model 2 system are great. from what i've read all the controllers work on all the systems, regardless of model or region

I have heard that some of the oval button model 1 systems can play imports, but I guess that would be a "disadvantage" of the model 2 system

Well I was able to buy a saturn on ebay over the weekend.

Got a model 2 with one model 2 controller, virtua cop in the pack-in sleeve, a disc only copy of Virtua Fighter 2, and copy of the import Super Dimension Fortress Macross which appears to at least have the case and manual. Total package with shipping was 29.99.

I think it went a bit under since the system didn't have an av cable, but since i have all my old hook ups for my previous system that's not an issue for me.

I still have Duke Nukem 3d, Virtua Cop 2, and Dragon Force along with a controller and a stunner that still work so all in all not a bad way to get started again.
