Hi I would like to hookup my Dreamcast to my 1080P 120Hz HDTV, and was reading that the best possible picture would come from a VGA adapter. There are two sold on this website, the one that's $21.99 and only has VGA & the one for $27.99 that has both style hookups.
Would the one with both style be the way to go because some games don't play threw VGA?
I also have a TX-SR707 Onkyo receiver and was wondering what the best possible audio I could send from the box to my receiver because there is no optical audio back then?
Which VGA Box To Buy & Best Audio Option?
Re: Which VGA Box To Buy & Best Audio Option?
There was optical audio out back then, fyi. The dreamcast doesn't generate 5.1 surround sound, but your receiver might fake it well enough.Dreamer wrote:Hi I would like to hookup my Dreamcast to my 1080P 120Hz HDTV, and was reading that the best possible picture would come from a VGA adapter. Re: Which VGA Box To Buy & Best Audio Option?
So with one of the VGA boxes I'm looking to buy, do I send the one speaker wire output to my receiver & what is that output called? There was optical audio out back then, fyi. The dreamcast doesn't generate 5.1 surround sound, but your receiver might fake it well enough.
If I buy the VGA box with both hookups do I loose the audio on the VGA side if I'm switched to the RCA side?
Re: Which VGA Box To Buy & Best Audio Option?
I'd say buy the vga only. Every DC game can do VGA, some require the proper boot disc and some require that you alter(a 20 second process) a downloaded .iso

I wouldn't be able to mod that myself.d123456 wrote:I think it is possible to mod the dc to get digital audio out.

Get the VGA box that has bypass S-Video and Composite out. Some games do not have VGA capabilities.Dreamer wrote:Hi I would like to hookup my Dreamcast to my 1080P 120Hz HDTV, and was reading that the best possible picture would come from a VGA adapter. An important question is will your HDTV VGA input support 640x480? Most newer HD LCDs don't. Check the specs or test with a laptop set to that lower res mode.

Again if I buy the box you suggest when you switch from VGA to RCA do you loose the speaker audio out on the VGA side?Get the VGA box that has bypass S-Video and Composite out. Some games do not have VGA capabilities.

Is the speaker out the best Audio I can get out of that setup and will it sound fine? Usually speaker out wires are not that great sounding or distorted in my case as least.
Re: Which VGA Box To Buy & Best Audio Option?
Audio is fine even though the VGA side uses a mini phono plug. A simple ⅛ plug to RCA stereo conversion cable works fine going to input of your Reciever. The box has a separate audio out for VGA and S-Video/Composite which is ideal for the separate inputs. Both video and audio cables will need to be plugged in for the bypass to work. To make both audio cable sets work on you maybe a pair of Y adaptors? Might reduce the audio signal though without an A-B switch.Dreamer wrote:Again if I buy the box you suggest when you switch from VGA to RCA do you loose the speaker audio out on the VGA side?CRT GAMER wrote:Get the VGA box that has bypass S-Video and Composite out. Why not have your HDTV feed the receiver and have the Dreamcast audio go directly to the TV?
