Nominate Games for New Sega Genesis Megadrive Hidden Gems

Post by racketboy »

So I’m working on the entire Genesis/Megadrive hidden gems guide
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2007/01/ ... -sega.html

It was our first installement of the series and it shows. We didn't have very good feel for the series yet -- some of the picks weren't THAT hidden, we didn't expand the genres out that much, and the writeups were lacking.

So...! I’m taking nominations for games that should have a full entry dedicated to them. But to nominate, you need to write at least three sentences why you think the game is special. It doesn’t have to be a game that is listed, but it shouldn’t be less obscure than ones that are listed and definatly more obscure than the “obvious choices” I’ll take a look at what you guys come up with and will choose the best ones to include….

The best contributions/writeups will be included in the revised post :)

Thanks for your help!

(PS -- I'm still polishing up the SNES revise -- it's turning out great!)

My nomination is for the title Air Buster! (released 1991)

This title is for the Sega Genesis and Sega Mega Drive. Any fan of side scrolling shooters would love to own this title, but its ability to be found is pretty slim. I do not know the actual number that as produced, but my guess is the developer Kaneko USA, LTD..kept this one produced in low numbers. This game supports play for two gamers. THe colors are smooth and the power ups are plentiful..if you can catch them!

Kaneko also produced Aero Blasters which many may know from the Turbo Grafx 16 system....very nice shooter!

You forgot to mention the Video Glove!

Agreed, though, one of the best looking/brightest Genny shmups...

Make sure to include Dick Tracy. There's something really satisfying about that game.

Truxton

This is what a balls out, high difficulty, manly shooter was like before bullet hell shmups came around. In addition to great gameplay, this game had a great art direction (the skeletons just scream 80's Heavy Metal) and great music.

Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter

This is an awesome beat-em-up based on a comic. Unfortunately, it has a broken 2D Fighting segment for the bosses. If you can get past that, you have a beat-em-up that compliments Streets of Rage.

RED ZONE

Image

Very cool effect reminds me of a C64 Broderbund chopper game,
not Choplifter but Raid on Bungeling Bay

EDIT
Both are overhead view games as in Arcade Thunderblade in overhead mode. Fly helicopter around a huge map shooting at targets. Its not a shump more like an explore to find the next target. Red Zone has 3d effect of towers scrolling as you fly by and under.

Don't forget to write a few sentences to help out for the game you nominate :)

The fighting game and beat-em-up game genres need to be segregated. I would strongly nominate Mystical Fighter for the beat-em-up list. It seems incredibly generic for the first few minutes but please keep playing and you will see it's genius.

Outlander and Techno-Cop for the Action/Adventure genre. Violence and gore for violence and gore's sake. I can't help but think of them as a middle finger to Nintendo at that time.

Marvel Land for the platforming genre. Um, I like it.

I liked Gynoug very much. The control was very good. Nice graphics in a steampunk/scifi/horror/fantasy style. Some of the effects astonished me back then, 100 years ago.

Mega Man: The Wily Wars

Image

It was a colorful but true Mario All-Stars style port of Megaman, Megaman 2, and Megaman 3. Exclusive to the game were several extra levels called Wily's Tower. This was unlocked with completion of the main game. Each level contained an exclusive boss and you were able to mix and match items and weapons from the first three games to tackle the challenge.

It was only released on cartridge in Europe with a Sega Channel release in the states. The only Mega Man game on the Genesis / Megadrive hardware. If that doesn't qualify as a 'hidden gem' I don't know what would.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
