Yeah, if you buy online and wait a day you can get one for dirt cheap. Or you can hit up your local goodwill and see if they have an Ethernet switch or random old Wi-fi Router which you can then just use as an Ethernet switch. (Note that to use a router as an Ethernet switch ignore the one jack off to the side or colored differently where you would normally plug the internet into and only use the 4 that are clustered together)lisalover1 wrote:Unless you want the cable immediately, I wouldn't recommend buying it at Radio Shack, Staples, etc. You can find them online at places like Amazon or Overstock for $1 or less, as opposed to around $30-$50 at physical stores.noiseredux wrote: Mod_Man, this is a GREAT explanation. Thank you! Two questions:
1. How do I "make sure my LAN/Ethernet controller is enabled?"
2. How/where do I find a crossover cable (does Staples or Radioshack etc carry them)? Does it look different than an ethernet cable?
EDIT: Here's one for around $2: http://www.amazon.com/Offspring-Technol ... B0006B05PI
The nice thing about using Ethernet switched if you have one or can get one for cheap is that you can just use any old Ethernet cable, but it involves having a second box to act as a middleman. It's mostly a preference thing, but I find crossover to be simpler for what you're doing. Now if you want to hook all of your older and non-wireless consoles up to the net this way then a switch would be perfect.
Looks wise they're identical to an Ethernet cable, so buying the one that Lisa linked is perfect as it stands out with it's bright colors and you won't forget which cable it is. It would suck loosing a crossover cable in a box of regular Ethernet cables as they can do the exact same damage that Ethernet cables do to objects when plugged from one to the other only in reverse. (AKA ethernet "modem to computer" is OK but Crossover "modem to computer" = broken LAN card.
Here's how to tell if your LAN card/Ethernet Port is currently disabled:

ok, I've got the network bridge all set I think... but it's not letting me connect in the game. What settings do I want within the game menu?

What game are you trying to play? If you're playing an Xlink game, then it won't connect unless there is someone else online.

Use the settings shown here: http://schtserv.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... =42#p73119
...Except the DNS settings, that is. For your primary DNS, use: 209.17.170.137
You don't need a secondary DNS, but you can type another one listed on the linked page, if you want.
