How do you play your Dreamcast fighters?

I use the standard controller, but it isn't advisable if you're really into fighting games. I don't play a lot anymore, and find it's adequate. In fact I really started to appreciate it when I tried playing Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube recently. There are worse pads out there for fighters.

If you're really into fighters (in particular the 2D ones) though, I'd advise looking into a Saturn controller adapter thing, or the Ascii Pad FT that others have suggested.

Agree with adaptor. Pads are great, but to really smack the fighters, I think an Arcade stick is the best route. A PSX adaptor opens up a world of Playstation Arcade sticks for the Dreamcast.

I just got Project Justice and was wondering if there were any good alternatives to the standard pad. After a decade of playing the original Rival Schools on a dual shock the dreamcast pad is a little...restrictive.

X-Arcade Dual Tankstick.

It's expensive, but considering it works with everything made after the PS1 & it's the only bat-type stick worth a damn, I'd say its more than worth it.

And yes, I ONLY use bat-type sticks. Take yer ball-on-a-sticks and shove them up your pooper. I don't hold my stick like a friggin' wineglass, I hold it like a friggin' man!

To each his own, and a contradiction of statements. The ball stick is held with hand wrapped over the top. Bat handles are normally held like your wine glass analogy, a contortionist syndrome twisted hand control. The Red Ball with less slippage a more natural position for my big paws with full movement of arm. Good solid feel of slamming the short throw stick against stops.

The only way I can do anything on a ball-stick is to hold the stick underhand - palm facing up, index and middle to the left of the stick, ring and pinky to the right of the stick. That's what I've been told is the 'wineglass' position. It works, but it's also uncomfortable as hell and ends up cramping my hands up in no time flat.

Meanwhile, I can hold a bat-stick like, ya know, a normal person. Just grip it as if I were holding anything else, and I can actually do moves with it. If I tried to do that with a ball-stick (I think they call it 'Monkey gripping'), nothing. I'll make a bunch of awkward movements and not be able to do jack shit. Anytime I'm forced to use a ball-stick, I always have to go with a character who I can win with completely independent of special moves, because I ain't gonna be able to do special moves.

First time I noticed it was at a tournament a couple years ago. I was completely puzzled, but apparently it's been all the rage in Japan for quite some time now.

Which, ya know, is great for the Japanese. But I ain't Japanese. I'm American, and by God, I'm going to play fighting games the way I was brought up.
