I ask because I'm getting into fighting games and want to know if you guys find the standard DC controllers tolerable, or if you think an arcade stick is a must have.
BTW, is there a cheaper alternative to the Agetek?
How do you play your Dreamcast fighters?

Tolerable only if you've been weened on pads. That said, you could always spring for an Ascii Fighting Pad if you prefer pads, but I'd go for a stick. There are alternatives to the Agetec but nothing worth noting...at least not in the same price range.

You can play SNK fighting games just fine with the standard pad and even Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but other than that I highly recommend you pick up the Agetec stick or an ASCII pad ft controller, it's jhas the same layout as a saturn controller just heavier and has a vibrating function. No way you can play any other capcom fighters with the standard pad. If those are too expensive you can always buy an adapter that would let you use a saturn pad. I personally switch off between the Agetec stick or the ASCII pad

As far as controllers go (as in stock controllers that come with a console) the DC has one of the best (The Saturn is by far the best), I play my DC fighters with it, other than the fact there is no 6 button layout, it is perfect.Medical Dust wrote:I ask because I'm getting into fighting games and want to know if you guys find the standard DC controllers tolerable, or if you think an arcade stick is a must have.

in truth, i have found it a bit annoying since it seems to be sensitive in the up button. sometimes i try to pull off a combo and i just end up jumping. but i would say if you have to use a dc controller, it's quite tolerable either way.

My DC fighting pads:

The Ascii Pad FT is nice, but I prefer a Saturn pad + adapter. The Ascii Pad FT's dpad and buttons don't feel as good, and the rumble motor gets in the way of your grip.
There is also the Treamcast controller, but from the reviews it doesn't sound good.

I'm a d-pad fighter all the way. Ascii Pad FT. Never leave home without it! I own both the SNK & Capcom versions as well as 2 Greys. Rock! Also, Dreamcast fighters are the best!

Re: How do you play your Dreamcast fighters?
Nothing wrong with a pad as long as it's a good pad like the SNES. The d-pad on the Dreamcast is pretty bad (though not nearly as bad as the 360) and the triggers aren't too good for fighting games (too much pull).jfrost wrote:Feeling vindicated by the winner of EVO's SSF2THDR tournament this year? Re: How do you play your Dreamcast fighters?
I played with the Saturn controller i.c.w. total plus 5 converter.
that played terrific.
Only downside was with SF3 TS, the Z and C buttons were not usable.
In Double impact it still functioned well!
SF3 TS, (probably) the best fighting game eva
