I guess you could say I always was. When I started gaming as a young child and NES was the big thing, I was obsessed with the colecovision I found in the closet. The only time I was hardcore into the current generation was with the Sega Genesis. As the 16-bit era flashed by I stayed with my genesis and SegaCD for ever.

I didn't upgrade my consoles until 2000 when I bought a Sega Saturn off a friend in class... I wanted a Dreamcast as well and got the Sonic Adventure Special Edition Dreamcast late in my senior year. Even though now I owned a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast, the majority of my gaming was spent on the Sega CD still (2000 was about the time I found SegaXtreme and a large community of Sega fans).

Even today, I stay up to date with the console market, I own a XBOX 360 and Wii right now. But the majority of my gaming, and my love of games is lost back in the 16-bit era. I enjoy the simplicity of the games... and despite their inherit simplicity, they are harder then a lot of games I play on the XBOX 360. I mean, shit, two of the big games on XBOX 360 are 'Gears Of War' and 'BioShock'. If you can't beat those games, that just means you haven't played them... their fuckin' EASY... you have no real consequence for dieing. ohhhh no's in BioShock you go back a few feet to the stupid chamber thingy... all the baddies even still have the same health as before you died.

What the hell happened to 3 lives, you lose em', fuck you try again bitch... from the beginning.

yeah...

Adny and I were even over excited about Orange Box coming out. We bought it the day of release and it didn't even take us a week to beat Episode 1, 2, and Portal. A lot of fun (especially Portal), but still... 6 days and we still had time to work on other stuff as well!

Well the episodes were supposed to be short, right?
That's why they are so much cheaper.

I actually prefer it that way since I typically don't have the attention span to finish games. I'd feel less guilty if I paid less and finished a higher percentage of the game.

Ya know, I've been considering buying a genesis again, if only to use as a basis for quality checking the music emulation on the PC side of things.
Just remember that the music quality varies widely even across Genesis hardware models and variations.

That bullshit respawn feature in single player games needs to take a hike. That's easily the biggest reason why Bioshock and RE4 were neither suspenseful or difficult. When was the last time a game actually got your heart racing by atmosphere, intensity, or pure risk? God I miss that. I remember 16-bit games where after beating a boss, I was actually sweating a little and my eyes were dry from not blinking.

Someday, I should actually buy an NES.

Heh, I need to pick up some NES/Famicom names sometime. I picked up one of those "Neo-Fami" clones in some weird Japanese store back in June. But they didn't sell any games - only puzzles of old NES games which at first I thought were repackaged or cloned games...

I guess in all honesty, I'm not. I'm just a gamer through and through, whether it be new stuff for my 360, or old rare titles for my SNES. I still own every console I've bought, along with most of my fave games ever for each system, so I'm happy I have the choice to play what I want, when I want. 8)

I've spent most of my gaming life one generation behind everyone else. So in a way I consider that I've been somewhat of a retro gamer my whole gaming life. I finally crawled back last generation, finally buying new games, playing a new console and once I got there I realized that its not worth paying full price to play a game the week it comes out.

Since then I have been spending more going back and catching up on even more games that I couldn't get the first time around. Bulking up my collection.

A month or so ago my brother and I decided to buy back the NES, the only console(and games for a console) that we had ever sold, it was for a SNES though so gimme a break. A few days ago I played Super Mario Bros 3 from start to finish, every level and it made me feel relieved to rediscover some of my happiest childhood moments. Just yesterday my brother and I bought back the first game that we ever had. A rare 3 in 1 cart with Super Mario Bros, Tetris and Nintendo World Cup.

It feels great to be a retro gamer.
