Sega Saturn Black System Disc

Post by eldopo »

I have a model 2 saturn that was passed down from a developer and included a black system disc...ive tried to read up a bit on it but i havent figured out exactly what i can do with it.
Is there a known way to use it as one would a modchip? Will it play a backup game?

Can't help you but do you mind uploading a pic?

Is it like the one found here

Cause if it is my guess would be that you need that cart to "test" games. Probable a whole lot easier to get a mod chip to play backups.

Yes, it is that one! I've actually been screwing around with it all day researching online and I finally managed to figure it out!

I burned a .bin of Radiant Silvergun and Fifa 98 so far as images in Toast; I booted the system disc until it said "completed" in the top left hand corner then popped the lid and switched it with the backups and they worked perfectly! I switched the region code on Radiant Silvergun prior to burning and Fifa was already NTSC-U.

Looking like i wont need a mod chip after all.

So if someone else were to burn a .ISO of this disk, would they to be able to play burnt games too? Does it allow you to play imports after the "completed" message is displayed?

The problem is the same with burning any Saturn game. You are missing the security ring on the outside of the disc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe if you use the swap trick for the system disc, then you can boot games after loading the system disc until you turn the power off. But this still requires an initial swap trick, so you might as well have put in your burned disc at that point. I guess if your sessions consist of you exchanging games every few minutes, burning the system disc might be beneficial. Otherwise, we just have to let the lucky ones who own the disc enjoy it.

This is cool and everything but here's the real problem. You now own a development disc for the Sega Saturn. A RARE AND INCREDIBLY VALUABLE DEVELOPMENT DISC.

You'd be nuts to put wear and tear on it by using it as a bootdisc. You could get a good lump of cash and a free modchip + installation into your Saturn easily if you wanted to. But please don't use it just as a bootdisc unless you're gonna take extremely good care of it; it would suck if one of the last few remaining ways to easily develop Saturn games was lost thanks to a tiny scratch.
