Have you ever replaced the save battery? A dying or dead battery can cause the Saturn to act up as well. Unfortunately if that's the case your saves are probably gone and you can't even get the system up to copy to a memory card. If all else fails you might take the battery completely out and leave the system unplugged for a few minutes then try with no battery.
I'll try it. I had a dead battery before and none of this ever happened. We shall see.

I haven't tested the system without the battery yet, its in pieces now. The battery does put out 3.00 V though...
However, I do have an extra Oval button Model 80000 laying around. Can I swap the CD lens assembly with another version to see if it works or is that a no no? I don't want to break the assembly because it is a working Saturn.
Oh and the main board and capacitors all look great.

Did it work after that apparently 'new' battery was put in? Wipeoutguy had to replace his battery and his machine had the blue reset button in the battery compartment and didn't want to work even with the new battery until the memory was reset as it had gotten corrupted while the old battery was low.

Yeah, I replaced the battery in this Saturn and it worked for about 2 months, then it sat and now this.
You know, now that I think about it, my laser assembly question shouldn't need answered. A Saturn will get to the CD play screen without the laser assembly even in the machine. There is a problem with something else. I'll check out the battery thing by tomorrow.
Working again, and I don't know how. I took the battery out for the time it was apart, and put it all back together with the same battery and its working again.
Yeah, in other words your memory as corrupted from the long term storage and after the battery had been removed for a while it wiped itself clean and voila!

Glad it was just memory corruption. Obviously it sucks to lose them, hopefully you had anything important backed up on a memory cart. I forgot about the memory thing at first because it hasn't happened to me.
Nope, it's basically what happens as the save battery starts to die and the voltage becomes intermittent. Just use a good battery from a known and better manufacturer such as Energizer, Sony, Duracell, etc... NOT cheapos like Rayovac, Sunbeam or Sylvania.

Ray-O-Vac makes ALKALINES now. Have great endurance with these at a better price.
As modman points out though, not regular ones but good akalines or lithiums.
