Retarded TV, broken electronics, got a genesis 3

Post by The Apprentice »

So I finally got a replacement to my broken Genesis, a Genesis 3 in good shape with cords and two controllers for $25, I get it home and it doesn't work. So I open it up and use a q-tip and some alcohol to clean the pins of the blade connector, along with a screwdriver to push the pins closer to each other and... Nothing. Try the other cables. Nothing.

So then I realize I'm on the wrong input on my TV. It works! However, the other cable is busted. I tried it on my TV and It will not work at all. Soon, after testing, I realize that two RF modulators (switches RCA to RF) I was using had failed. :( So I rip those out. Then I try two others. One *kind of* works, the other spits out the worst signal I've ever seen that isn't static.

And all of this because my TV doesn't have RCA jacks. "What?" I hear you saying, but tis true. My mid-ninties Sanyo was designed with nothing but a cable input (and has mono sound :x ). Guess what I'll be doing today! I'm going to get a replacement TV! This one has 2 RCA jacks, I believe an S video port, and a cable input.

The morals of this story? Don't but a TV that doesn't have RCA. Stay away from Modulators, they are cheeply built. Don't buy a game system when the flea market booth that is selling it also sells furniture. Check your TV's input before ripping your game system out and driving to the flea market to demand a refund.

I've been through every kind of miserable wasteland of broken stuff these past couple of months and I'm really here just for reassurance. Anyone else having TV problems???

haha i like how your first inclination was to tear apart the genesis when you didn't get a video signal :)

the genesis 3 actually seems like a bad option if you're into picture quality and stereo sound. i have a very recent, but very small tv and the mono output and the rf signal sound and look good on mine.

The genesis 3 supposedly has a good video encoder chip. You can mod it for S-video if you know how. I don't know about the sound, though. I never found stereo sound all that important for most 8 or 16-bit games. But with the Genesis 3, reproduction quality of FM synth will also be important.

I bought a Genesis 3 because I'm interested in saving space. It's pretty good. I can't tell much on video reproduction, but it seems OK to my eyes. The only think I don't like -- and I think this is just Genesis in general -- is I can see some very thin vertical lines in some of the graphics. They just don't look as sharp and smooth as my SNES. I'm thinking about sending it off to Old School Gamer to get it modded for S-vid out. Anyone used that service before?

I have a mono AV cable, and I need to upgrade to a stereo one. The model 2 and 3 Gennys do have stereo sound output, right?

Well, I got the new TV not just for the genesis, but for its extra ports. The use of them has allowed me to blast the tunes of Jet Grind Radio over my surround sound, and here Night's music in stereo. As for the genesis sound question, I can't be sure if it's mono over two speakers or stereo. It sounds just like my Genny 2 did on my old TV.
