I recently bought a Sony SD tv for my retro consoles. The TV has component input, but doesn't do progressive.
I've read all the posts here I could find, but I want to ask one (potentially stupid) question: If I run my Genesis SCART through a YUV converter, it'll work on the TV, right? That is, there's nothing inherently progressive about either the signal or the convertor, right?
I've got SCART cables for all my consoles that I was running through an upscaler into my HDTV, but I got tired of the issues and bought an old-school TV.
Also, can someone point me to the correct SCART->Component converter for NTSC? The one I have is PAL, which worked fine for the upscaler, but not for this.
Will Genesis SCART RGB -> Component be interlaced?
Re: Will Genesis SCART RGB -> Component be interlaced?
The Genesis puts out 240p, but I can't imagine your TV not supporting that. I can understand it doing 480i and not 480p, but 240p should be pretty standard.
The converter should detect automatically whether the signal is PAL or NTSC, but at any rate, here's the converter I have:

It works great on my LCD.

Sony SDTV's are amazing. You should have no problems at all, especially since 240p and 480i ate the SDTV standards.
240p: Progressive SDTV where you can see the interlace which is pretty much unnoticeable to the naked eye as the interlace lines are colored the same as each individual pixel that touches it, but it makes the entire image much sharper and colorful. This is what practically all your old consoles output at until the Dreamcas/Gamecube/PS2/Xbox era came about.
480i: Interlaced SDTV: Benefits are increased resolution and smoother transitions, but this comes at the cost of the image's clarity. Sometimes blatantly obvious interlacing is visible to the naked eye with colors loosing a bit of their luster unless a high end SDTV connection such as S-Video, Component and RGB is used. This is the main resolution you'll be watching and the resolution at which good cables are actually worth it. Especially with Trinitron being reference sets designed to squeeze every pixel, defect and benefit of the image and source input onto the screen.
That's a basic and incredibly simplified breakdown of it all. My Trinitron handles 240p beautifully and my older consoles have never looked better; as long as they're on a good connection that is...... 480i on the other hand is a bit tricky; poor sources such as RF and Composite look harsh and rough with all the defects of their weak signals viewable in fast moving or colorful scenes looking washed out. 480i via S-Video looks nice and sharp with a slight bit of interlace that's only viewable when a console or source is outputting a poorly coded source signal or badly mastered video. Component on the other hand makes images look stunning, but any badly mastered images such as some interlacey Anime DVD's seriously take a hit. Basically component is the double edged sword but if used with a quality input source it looks perfect.

Re: Will Genesis SCART RGB -> Component be interlaced?
Hi, I'm thinking about going with that kind of setup for Genesis. But how does the audio get connected? From what I can see in the picture of that converter there are no audio ports, just the 3 ports for video cables.
Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Super Gameboy adapter, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis model 1, Playstation 1, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo DS Lite

Thanks for your help, guys.
For that, there are two options (I have a similar box currently): You can do a fairly simple mod to the converter to tap the audio lines out to RCA jacks that you install on the side, or you buy a breakout boxfor the audio.Hi, I'm thinking about going with that kind of setup for Genesis. Or, if you have a Model 1 Genny just grab the Stereo feed from the headphone jack.

Cool, thanks for the advice.
I do have a model 1 Genesis, so how does that work, what kind of a cord would fit into the headphone jack and yet have the red and whites to plug in?

Get thee to a Radio Shack.galaxy_ranger wrote:Cool, thanks for the advice.

They're really common. I've got probably half a dozen laying around.
Note that while this is the simplest method, I don't like it. But hey, it'll cost like 5 bucks and you can do it in 10 seconds, so go for it.

Go to any Radio Shack and ask for a headphone to RCA patch cable. They just started carrying these really nice gold tipped radio shack branded ones with a right angle connector so the cord will hug the system and not stick out for only $5. They sound great and fit right in with the look of the Genny.
All you have to do after that is set the volume to 5 or 6 MAX (Any higher and you start getting interference and hearing ground loops as a result of the amplifier kicking in like if you had a pair of headphones attached instead.) as low volumes lack clarity and high volumes sound scratchy.
