Just before our elections a group of Nazis called EDL staged some protests in our local town over plans to build a bigger mosque. The plans were squashed by the council but the same right wing group staged the same protests again last week. Proof to me that the people involved didnt actually care about the mosque and are just spoiling for a fight.

I would be just as opposed to a Christian church being built on or around a abortion clinic that got bombed by a christian fanatic, by the way.

I dunno, seems like saying you're opposed to a mosque at ground zero is stereotyping. It's like saying this religion is responsible for the actions of a select group of people.

I don't know the whole story behind who exactly is in charge of trying to get this mosque built near ground zero though. And I don't know if they have an agenda. It could be that they're simply looking to stir up trouble/start a fight.

Both seem to match actually since those who blow up abortion clinics in the name of God don't represent all Christians.

A church near where I live was recently bought over and converted into a mosque.
I'm not comfortable with things like this. I don't want the culture of my country to drastically alter, and it seems that that is what's slowly going to happen.
So basically, mosques: not on my turf.

Mosques aren't like prisons, garbage dumps, waste treatment facilities, etc. With these, I can understand the NIMBY yell. Anyone who gets angry about a mosque in or around their back yard (whether that be "ground zero" or anywhere else) is really letting their ignorance flag fly. To suggest that religious people shouldn't be allowed to gather and practice their customs in certain places reeks of a misunderstanding and misinformed fear of the Other.

As has been stated already, it is not right to characterize a faith by the actions of a few extremists. Abortion bombers and the God Hates Fags morons don't represent 99.9% of Christians, and terrorist bombers don't represent 99.9% of Muslims.

Also, it seems to me that every time we start restricting freedoms in the name of security, arresting and acting out against Muslims in the name of fear or suspicion, and arguing with one another over stupid shit like this - that the 9/11 hijackers and all the other terrorist actions before/since really did accomplish their goal of making us frightened and weaker.

I agree with you, and would not protest the building of the mosque near ground zero. Also, not being a Muslim myself, and being ignorant of the cultural issues on that side of the equation, I can't really evaluate the criterion for selecting that site. However, purely from an external, semi-secular perspective, it just looks like a bad idea on their part if Muslims are seeking acceptance, tolerance, and respect in American culture.
