Broken Sega Genesis, won't power on

Post by wootcube »

So I bought three Genesis (Genesi? Genesises?...plural?) as-is and two won't power on. They're both the original US model.

Is there any chance that I may be able to fix it? Are there any commonly seen issues I could check for? I know that all of the hookups work, so I'm certain it's the console that is the problem. I've also opened both up and cleaned up the dust/dirt on the inside. I've searched but I can't seem to find any guides online to figure out what is wrong with them.

...Also, I don't post here very often so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

If all are IDENTICAL model consoles, flip flop components around. Maybe narrow down if power supply or console. I think there are different volt and amp rated power supplies depending on which model, Hobie has a power brick guide at his Signature Link.

I have a working console with working cables, so I know those cables work and I've been using them to test the others. All three models numbers are identical. So I'm pretty sure its the console itself.

I just recently hook up My Genesis and I had not played with it for over a decade. It wouldn't start up, which I was surprised because It had always worked. Its started to give me a red screen which I have never seen before. Then I saw an error code message on the tv, which was weird again. So I decided to open up my console for the first time. I dust it out with air filter spray then I check out the cartridge slot notice dust and some odd tiny piece of wood, Of course I cleaned that area out. Then I got the thinnest piece metal stick and jammed each pin hole into the slot area... so cartridge would easily go through the insert (don't blame me if you make a mistake). After that, I turned on console and it started to work great :) . Then I had another issue sega genesis controller stopped working and only the dpad and start button would worked. So I got rubbing alcohol to fix the 3 rd party controller abc buttons and still it doesn't work. The C button could not be fixed as much as I tried to do. So im planning to throw those away find me some authentic genesis controllers. Oh I own the Original sega genesis model 1

Does Genesis red light even turn on.

Do the power lights come on? If so does the heat sink on the left warm up at all? Maybe the cart slot is really dirty?

No, thats the problem - it doesn't even power on at all. No light, no nothing, so I don't really know where to start.

If its just dead, its no big deal, I did get a working one in the lot, but I figured I might as well try to salvage the other two.

Is the fuse blown? It's near where the power connector comes in.

The fuse looks fine...I don't know, I didn't really want to end up digging through this thing - just thought that if it was a common problem I might as well look into it. I've never really had a console break, let alone completely crap out on me before.

Thank you for the suggestions anyways though!
