So Modman, is the N-Gage worth all the pain and misery?

 Sorry...

I did try a friend's bluetooth headset and got the same error, plus I tend to hate bluetooth's anyway.

 Kinda, as a general phone it's actually not bad. As a gaming device I'm happy with the few games I've been researching that look good for future purchases.

Overall I kinda knew most of what to expect going in thanks to the phone's lousy reputation but It's not as bad as everyone says it is.

Perhaps a new odd sized plug soldered in I linked earlier?

The N-Gage doesn't need a lot of plugs and sockets. There's just a USB connector, audio in and out (using tenth-inch micro-plugs, not standard eighth-inchers), a DC input, and a hole for the speaker's sound to get out.

They're talking about the original N-Gage, the QD only features an AC Jack the headset jack and the MMC/Game slot along with integrated bluetooth.

EDIT! I'm literally about five seconds from buying an unlocked one of these from a friend of mine for like $5 though, it's still what personifies the cell phone in my head when I think about it:

That was my family's first cell phone (the one you just linked).

 My family's first was one of the clones of it made by Audiovox as Verizon was sold out when we went to go get our first "family cell phone" in 2001.

I'm surprised at the amount of stuff you can still buy that actually has that iconic pocket for it on the side too.
