NES has power, audio...no video?

Post by Kiko68 »

Hey everyone, I've got a little problem with my NES and hope you guys could help. Earlier today I was on my NES, and everything worked fine. Next, I turn it on and just like that, NO VIDEO. I don't have a clue what could be wrong. I've tested the cables, TV and determined its the A/V jack on the side of my NES that's causing the problem. Is there anything I could do? I'm not sure why it would just stop working like that...but I have no problem busting it open to find a fix (if you have one  ). Any help would be appreciated!

Does the RF still work? It's possible that there's a dried out/bulging cap somewhere in the video output if the RF still works.

Not sure, don't have an RF adapter at the moment. Bulging cap? Any way to fix it? I have taken the top shell off the NES but can't notice any problems :?

If you have an RF box from a Genesis/SMS/TG 16 they'll work too to test. If you can determine if the system is coming on and RF works, then look for anything bad in the area near where the A/V plugs are.

Are the cables plugged in? Have you tried cleaning the cartridge you use to test?

Also, you should really try it with the RF adaptor. If it works with that, that's good and it's probably just the jack isn't soldered on, or possibly a broken jack.

If it doesn't work, then that's bad.

Agree. Perhaps a dirty cart contact or even the video cable where its plugged into the NES. Unplugging and plugging a few times may help. Even some contact cleaner or alcohol with the power unplugged. The "toaster" NES cart contacts do eventually fail from design, cleaning does help.
