How Much Were New Games In The Past?

Post by DCAllAmerican »

When the hell did $60 become the norm for a game.

I remember back in the day when SF2: Turbo (SNES) was $69.99.
Hell I remember DOOM was $80 New.

How much were NES games

My memory is gone right now

Yep, SF2 was £60 brand new and most SNES/MegaDrive games were between £40 and £50 depending on how popular they were. Now if you shop around you can get most Wii and 360 games for less than £30, not PS3 games thou, they remain well overpriced. I blame the piracy for forcing them to sell us games at a fairer price.

I'm pretty sure most NES games were $40 in the US. I remember that my grandmother would always spend up to 40 bucks on us grandkids for a gift, and it was the perfect price for a new game at Christmas or a b-day. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

SNES games were more. RPGs and some of the later games with more megs (and supposedly more content) were $60 and $70. I've heard on various retro gaming podcasts that Phantasy Star IV and Virtua Racing for the Genesis were both $99 at the time of release.

It's all relative, but you're right, it's getting more expensive right now. Sucks.

And $40 in 1987 would be about $71 now because of inflation.

I just cant believe that the same game can cost less on PC than on consoles.

That's because of licensing fees. Publishers have to give Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft a bit extra cash for every game they sell. PC games are a more open platform and don't have that issue.

That's true. I wasn't saying it's more expensive than 20 years ago - everything is more expensive than 20 years ago. But it's certainly more expensive than it was just three or four years ago. Everything from the consoles to the games to the controllers is costing a little more right now even compared to the PS2 and Dreamcast days.

Yeah, I know... I just wanted to remind everyone of the inflation aspect.
Anybody remember the Genesis version of Virtua Racing for $100?

In five years, cost of making a product doesn't go up enough to warrant that price increase. And 5 years from now it will be 70, nearly a 100 dollars for a game.

Generally its been $49.99 with a huge variety of games from $19.99-99.99. I think the industry wants to go up to 59.99 as a standard, but I think that will be hard to do especially with more games requiring download fee's for content that used to be included. I hope consumers buy all of the 39.99-49.99 games, but they probably won't.

Phantasy Star 4 was something like $79.99, on a side note that game was supposed to be released on Sega CD. Poor Sega CD sales forced them to cut frames from animated sequences they had produced with voice acting. Damn we missed out on what could have been an amazing game.
