Any advice on importing PSX titles?
I'm wanting to import a couple of PSX games. I have a pretty good idea on how to start with games like DonPachi, DoDonPachi, and Harmful Park. However, I have questions about what to use in order to get these to play on my American system. Do you guys have any suggestions on what to use (i.e. GameShark, Action Replay, etc.) as well as some other PSX games that were only available in Japan?

Mod Chip, boot disc or this Handy Cart. For the original grey parallel port PSX.

I used a plug-in cart for a while, but I later switched to a chip. The cart does the job but it's cumbersome to have to switch discs every time you want to play something. Plus, it makes it slightly annoying to change discs on multi-disc games. If you have any soldering experience you should go with the chip. It's dirt simple to install; just 7 points on the board and a decent chip will use color coded wires so you don't have to worry about screwing up the pins.

Maybe go with the older larger grey PSX for soldering. The smaller white PSONE PCB a real bear to solder.

Re: Any advice on importing PSX titles?
I think I have a general idea on what to do from this point. I do have some more questions though:
Where can I get the modchip?
How hard is it to solder the chip to the board?
If I solder in the wrong place, am I screwed?
Will doing all of this result in a small chance of destroying the system?

Here's the modchip I use:

Here's the instructions:

When I purchased the modchip they also sent me a bit of solder and some soldering braid (for removing old solder). The installation is very easy, just follow the pictures (and use the zoom links). Since all the points you're soldering to already have solder on them there's a good chance you can get by with just melting the existing solder and adding your wire to the join. If not, just add a little bit of extra solder. The biggest thing to worry about is accidentally bridging two points that are adjacent to each other, as that will likely ruin your PS1.

If you are worried on messing up your console I do install and sell pre-mods.
If you want to do it your self I sell chips: bare chip, chip kit and color coded pre-wire chip with updated install diagrams for most boards.
