metal gear solid special missions on PS3
I am trying to play the old ps1 game metal gear solid special missions on my PS3 but am having trouble loading the disc. its the bit where you change discs and have to put in the original metal gear solid game for a moment, when i put in the metal gear disc it just reads error on disc and i cant play the special missions disc. i no longer have my ps1 console i just use my ps3 for all my old ps1 games. any one no a way round this?

Does it play the standard MGS disc?

Not very clear what you mean by Special Missions disc. PS1 VR Missions single disc or starting a new game say unlocked Tuxedo Snake in PS1 Metal gear Solid? Did you play the Original PS1 Metal gear to the point where you have to switch discs using the PS3 as the console? I suspect maybe the way PS1 detects changing of disc with lid switch may not work when playing in the PS3.

Do other games work at all? What about CDs and DVDs? Is the disc in good condition?
Disc Swapping works fine with the ps1 Final Fantasy games, so I seriously doubt that's an issue either.
Personally I think it's likely early symptoms of a laser going bad. Sony should repair it no problems if it's still in warranty, and if it isn't, buying a new laser isn't too terribly expensive and it's pretty easy to install yourself.

Re: metal gear solid special missions on PS3
sorry if i didnt make it clear what i ment. basicly i use my PS3 to play all my old ps1 games and they all play fine. 'metal gear solid 1' plays fine itself. the game that doesn't work was the extra disc that came out after 'metal gear solid 1' called 'metal gear solid special missions' it wasn't supposed to be the sequel just sort of an add on game to play and it needed the original 'mgs1' disc to play. straight after inserting the 'mgs special missions' disc you needed to insert the 'mgs1' disc just for a moment then it would say "ok" then you had to put back in the special missions disc and the game would play (it was just a bunch of vr missions). however when i do this switch on the PS3 it says "wrong disc" insted of "ok" when i insert the mgs1 disc. i think its just one of those things and im gonna have to buy a ps1 console if im to play 'mgs special missions' again.

Digging around on Google tells me it's just one of those weird compatibility problems. Apparently a lot of ps2's have trouble with this game as well.
Looks like you'll have to pull out a ps1 for this

So we're not talking about VR missions here? Strange. This is totally new to me!
Also applequeso, love your avatar. I could watch it for hours.

I couldn't get this to work on my PS2 so I'm guessing it's a similar problem. Damn thing wouldn't even get past the credits screen on MGS as well as Ape Escape meaning I could never get a completed save.
It's a real shame as Special Missions is great fun.

Apparently the Euro version VR Missions disk requires a verify of owning original MGS disks.

Maybe PS3 falls in that same trap.Wiki wrote:The VR Disc from Integral was released as a separate product outside of Japan — in North America as Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (September 23, 1999) and in Europe as Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions (October 29, 1999). When loading Special Missions, the player is prompted to replace the game disk with either of the disks from Metal Gear Solid. If the disk is correctly identified, the player can insert the Special Missions disk and the game will then load as normal. This requirement was absent from the American VR Missions and Japanese VR Disc.[58] Special Missions cannot be played on pre-SCPH-70000 PlayStation 2 consoles, as it will not recognize either Metal Gear Solid disk, but the game is compatible with other consoles.

Oh wow, I assumed the verification thing applied to all regions of the game. How strange that it would in Europe and not elsewhere.
