His fault or not, my heart still goes out. That would suck.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Any one else scared of this sort of thing happening? Fire, flood, theft, etc? I think about it a lot. I've been meaning to get some insurance, actually.

I have insurance on my entertainment setup, I am almost hoping for a house fire, I valued all my stuff for its mint value, so if it goes up in smoke, say hello minty freshness!

Ya, the basic home owner insurance with contents won't cover a valuable game collection, or in my case a comic collection too.

Go easy on him! He said that it was supposed to be a temporary arrangement.

No? I thought that they usually insure the value of personal property for quite a good amount...

Besides, even if you have 1000 games that average a whopping $25 each you are only talking about 25K. Looking at my own policy, I have over 150K protection of personal property alone (not counting the coverage for the value of the home itself). Even if I had 3000 games/movies/music, expensive electronics, and a bunch of jewelry, etc. I imagine I would easily be covered for all I own (there is no way my furniture, appliances, etc. else adds up to even half of the coverage amount). As far as I can tell, I have a standard policy.

I feel bad for this guy.

Yeah. I think about this a lot. I live on the top floor of an apartment building, and after one of the guys on the first floor fell asleep while boiling hot dogs, causing the fire alarms to go off and fire dept to show up at 3:30AM, the thought of losing everything became all-too-real.
And the guy across the hall said his apt had been broken into a few times before, which is also disheartening..

I mean, sure, you could re-find and buy everything again.. but a lot of the consoles and games I've had since I was a kid, which sends the nostalgic factor (see also: enjoyment) though the roof

It depends on the coverage you get.

Not to be a jerk or anything, but i like many other gamers have been pressed for space. Retro collecting just takes up a ton of room. If you are storing stuff in a basement or shed that you aren't playing regularly and wouldn't want to see destroyed, you really really should get some of those vacuum sealed bags. Even if you don't vacuum it, it'll still be airtight so hopefully your collection will float.

I have a box of retro stuff in the basement, but it is all throwaway titles. The best stuff is up on the 3rd floor.

I think about it from time to time. All my friends who have had stuff stolen, have all had it in the first room that you walk into. Basically someone walks in and sees anything of value to take and runs off. I have 2 dogs though, so people don't tend to want to get in my house.

However, if everything did go I will say this- i sure as shit wouldn't collect again. Or i would in a completely different way from when i started. It would be a mixed blessing.
