Biggest Game Design Innovations

Post by racketboy »

Found this on Digg...
"From gameplay, to presentation to input devices, videogames are a hotbed of innovation. Ernest Adams notes 50 game design innovations, some that have already made their impact, and others that will shape the future of the medium..."

What are you thoughts on recent innovations?

The Wii is definitely one of the biggest innovations currently. I am a big fan of Nintendo, so perhaps I have some bias, but I was nervous when their controller was announced. Now I can't get enough of it!

I'm always interested in cool new ways to control games - the DS and Wii are amazing at that, but even before the gesture recognition of Black & White is very interesting.

Also, I love the way you level up on TES games (like Morrowind and Oblivion), without just using a generic "Exp" system.

Excellent article Racketboy, thanks for bringing it up (the execution is somewhat flawed, but it's not necessarily and easy topic - the idea of the article was without a doubt great).

It's interesting to see that a bunch of the innovations (either first use or popularization) can be linked with Molyneux. He may over hype stuff, but I'm really glad we have him working on games - I think he is a genius.

Ivo.
