Playing video game music
Playing video game music
I've been playing guitar for years and never really thought about how well classic video game music translates to guitar. I was surprised to find tons of guitar tabs online for quite a few songs I wanted to try out. Contra, Megaman 2, Castlevania and so on.
I had no idea how much shredding was involved in some of these songs! There were a ton of metal songs in disguise in the NES era. It's just blistering riff after riff. Today I've been working on "Jungle Jam" from Contra and "Flash Man" from Megaman 2. It's so metal.
Anyone taken an interest in actually performing video game music?

Have you ever heard of Project Chaos? They did some great things with Sonic music. Though they are more like remixes than strict representations of these songs. I love these:

And as for Castlevania music done with a guitar, look around the internets for the old Dracula Battle: Perfect Selection albums put out by Konami..

Re: Playing video game music
I started playing keyboard recently for the sole purpose of learning video game music. I've started to play some real stuff too, but still probably over the half the things I know how to play are songs from video games.
Also, I've been playing bass for years and know how to play a few video game songs - Chrono Trigger battle music, Mega Man 7 intro stage, Final Fantasy 7 bombing mission, SF2T Ryu theme, probably a couple more I'm forgetting. Unfortunately most bass lines from video game sonds are pretty lame and not much fun to play without the lead parts.

I'm known as ZebetiteGlitch or Zeza Von Thantos on other platforms.

I'm going to get myself a Synth one of these days and learn to play it.
Or I'll probably just end up running game MIDI's to it.

Pretty sweet. That little bit of palm muting they added to give it a bit more shape really worked.
Here's some Contra metal, I've got parts of it down, but when that big sweep of notes comes in, I fail bad. Like right at the beginning. It's a series of taps. Looks like pentatonic or something.

Bought a guitar after seeing someone play green hill zone on one. It definitely makes a nice decoration. . .

Obligatory Metroid Metal mention.
