The PC-Engine is 20 years old. It's 10 years younger than me

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The PC-Engine is now 20 years old. It joins the Famicom in old age. Hard to believe the first "16-bit" system and the last 8-bit system has finally made the transition. While the TG-16 didn't have much of an impact here in the US or in Europe, the PC Engine was a runaway hit in Japan and defined much of Japanese gaming that game after. While we were getting off on the Genesis, the Japanese Mega Drive stagnated, never able to truly compete with either the PC Engine or the Super Nintendo. And what was the Super Nintendo designed to compete against? Not the Mega Drive, but the PC Engine. Which is interesting, given the PC Engine was designed largely to trounce the NES. Talk about a convoluted chain of oneupmanship.

I don't really have anything to add other than , nice little rundown of the field of play back in the day.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I don't know how hard it would be to get one, but I think it would be kinda cool to have a PCE. They don't take up much space, and there would be a ton of shmuping to be had. Getting hold of games would a hassle though. I'd have to get them all via the Web.

Also, I think the 2600 was released 30 years ago in October.

Yes, but the NES was the first of the "modern" generation of systems and it turned 25 just recently. And the TG-16/PCE was the first of the "16-bit" and the last of the modern 8-bits. It won't be long before the Genesis and SNES pass that 20 year mark. Scary...

Oh man now I feel old!

I remember when me and my brother got one. Made us so popular at school (to kids who knew about games).

Also could not believe how small the thing is!

Amazing system for its time.
