whoa.....
Does Evangelion actually make sense now or is it the same old mess?

I doubt we're done with the franchise at any rate. Still highly milkable from the looks of it.
It makes perfect sense, it always had. (Look at the anime thread from circa august/september of last year for my extensive write up explaining and making complete sense of Eva for newbies, confused people and those who haven't seen the series circa 30 times. Also, AAARRGGHHH can't find thread.)

But that having been said from a plot standpoint 2.0 basically says fuck off and gives a big kick in the pants to the original storyline.

Couple other must sees: CITY OF THE LOST CHILDREN and I think his best work AMELIE.
Indeed, I own both. :)

City of Lost Children
is high on my list of things to see, so I'll get to that soon. For whatever reason, I have zero interest in Amelie despite the rave reviews. I get the sense (correct or not) that it is over the top indie/quirky just for the sake of it, and that it is a sappy story at that. Am I wrong?

I've seen Delicatessen and City of Lost Children and love them both.

First time I heard about CoLC was when I first rented the VHS copy of Heavy Metal from a local video rental place.

And I finished I Sell the Dead. Good ending.

I'll confess that I was a little disappointed by City of Lost Children. Part of it may have been that the version I saw was dubbed instead of subtitled. It was good, and good-looking. However, I did think it lulled a bit in the middle.

I really liked Amelie. I think you are correct that it is very quirky, but not in the obnoxious way that, say, Juno is. And the movie is really, really charming, but not quite painfully so. I would hesitate to call it particularly "indie," though, simply because I don't really have a strong feel for French films. I haven't seen very many of them, and the ones I have seen have mostly involved Luc Besson.

Also, at the very least, you get to watch Audrey Tautou be extremely cute for a couple of hours. That's not so bad.

I was under the impression it was a 'chick' movie before seeing it with a cute girl I was very much into at the time. Yes there is a love story in it that has a few sappy moments, but Amelie does some really funny things in the course of the movie. It's good stuff.

Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex: The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven. Okay these are 2 hour movies that basically string the main episodes of the first and second anime seasons together including only the major plot point. Pretty good as a rehash of the two seasons. There were some things I missed or didn't put together correctly. Seeing them summed up without the filler episodes (which are great as well) was like reading cliff notes. If you are expecting originality you will be disappointed as the movies are just clips from the show. In TLM the clips are placed in order as they appeared in the season. The scenes are mixed around somewhat in IE, which can be a bit confusing because the dialogue doesn't make sense in some cases or because some things go unexplained - like the return of the Tachihomas or how Ishikawa gets hurt. If you have seen the seasons and understand the main stories perfectly, you will probably be annoyed by these or at least find them unnecessary.

For the past 5 years I've been recommending Amélie to just about anyone who gives a damn about movies and so far it hasn't let me down. It's one of those universally-appreciated movies with the only limiting factor being the language (anyone too snobby/lazy to read subtitles should just stick to their limited perspective of their world)

Delicatessen was great, I have not seen his other films. I have seen the trailer for City of Lost Children a million times but it just never really interested me enough to see the film.

I'm in a Gangster movie stint at the moment. I just saw Goodfellas and the Godfather parts I and II.
