New Saturns, but with a catch

Post by Kevman »

I've been looking into buying a Saturn and today I came across this listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

Everything is fine and dandy until you get to the least pick, which instead of showing the regular saturn boxes, shows these generic packaging boxes. The guy claims they were sold to a school. Should I go for it and buy one?

If you don't care if it's new, you could get one with the original box opened for less.

Having the keyboard and all inserts is pretty cool and the average price for the system used is $30-$40. Depending on how much that keyboard is worth is what would make this deal. $20 is the cheapest I see the keyboard for on Ebay.

No use of the laser is better then repeated use. Its like buying a new car, yes used is cheaper but new cars whatever is wrong is because of you or the manufactor.

I dont think id buy it myself.
-There is no picture of everything together
-those shipping boxes don't make much sense to me, as they look like "master cartons" and I would assume that more than a single saturn would be shipped in one of these.
-At retail when these came out, these would be 400 a piece, who would buy seven? especially a school?
-I read an article claiming the keyboard was never even released in the U.S. can anyone verify?
-The listing claims they opened all seven box's for pictures-why are there only pictures of one, and a stock photo of the console to boot?

It might be tempting, but i think these are just cleaned up saturns with someone trying to sell them to make a few extra dollars in the process. Maybe someone else on here has a boxed saturn and can post pictures to compare, but i'm pretty sure these aren't really new in box saturns.

I don't think they should call it new in box if they had to open the boxes. That and the plain boxes look really bad, the original boxes are pretty cool.

I say pass on this one.

Also, @pepharytheworm, used consoles are different from used cars. Sega systems hold up really well over time.

I also noticed that the first (stock) photo shows a round button Saturn, whereas the third photo of the actual system you will be receiving is of the oval button model. If you have any intention of modding it sometime in the future, hold out for the round button model.

Regarding the fact that they were found in a school, I vaguely remember a poster from back in the day advertising an "educational package" Saturn only available to schools. I think the idea was to offer a cheap alternative to buying a $1500 computer. But I could be wrong, because I don't remember any educational software ever being available on the Saturn system.

interesting, this would make this a lot more legit if we could confirm it.

What would the Keyboard be used for? I don't believe any games supported it
