another of my reasons WHY I think the Gamecube GBPlayer is the greatest console ever -- all the random controllers etc you can use.

You know, I would have never even thought of trying to use other types of controllers for GCN on the Gameboy player.

Here's a question that occurred to me looking at your blog, NR

Your update about bootlegs has internal pictures of legitimate and fake carts, the fakes being obvious because of that huge ugly battery...

...but in the legitimate pics, I don't see any battery at all. Did the GBA carts not use batteries for saving?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Older GB/C carts used batteries, but (most, all?) GBA carts use flash memory. Same with DS carts.

Really? You just made a nerdy guy's day. I recently had my Mario Land 3 and Zelda: Oracle of Seasons' batteries both crap out on me in one week and I was starting to wonder if it was just a matter of time before my GBA games died as well. Hurrah for flash memory!

...now if only I had an easy way to replace the batteries on those GB carts...

Thanks Hobie!

I don't think it's super hard... open cart, cut out old battery, solder (or tape -- yikes!) new battery in. I'm planning a walkthrough on the blog at some point. The main problem is that in some cases it's cheaper to buy a new cart than to buy a replacement battery. :?

Yeah but then you have the same problem a couple of months or maybe a year down the road.

I'll probably wait to see your walkthrough on it though I don't know if I'll ever attempt that kind of repair on my own. I don't know how to solder (or have a soldering iron for that matter) and I don't know how I feel about using tape inside my games.

Thank golly my beloved Megaman carts all used password protection!

Dude, I can get a five pack of CR2032's for a buck at my local flea market.

Nice post on Outrun. Irony, as it seems all this month has been Outrun OUTSIDE of Racketboy. First the Together Retro, then my friend Kollin making some sort of remixes for it, then my Driver's Ed class showing a video built around Drunk Driving FEATURING Outrun, and now this. I think it's a message from the Sega God's to play the damn game already.
Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

2032s are the size for NES/SNES/Saturn/VMU/PC. GB carts use a smaller CR1616. The other problem is that there is usually room to add a socket in a NES/SNES cart, but there's no extra room in a GB cart. Now if you got tabbed batteries, removing and soldering in a new battery only takes a few minutes. You'd at least be good for another 10+ years.

So wait. There's a high gear in this game?

It all make sense now.

Good post, NR. I wouldn't have thought the wheel would work better than the Hori pad, but you made a valiant effort for our benefit, thank you. I agree that the port seems very good all around. Outrun captured my imagination as a kid for no other reason than, as you wrote, it was available in that full model arcade format- the first such cabinet I'd ever seen.

And maybe I haven't given the other games a fair shake, but Outrun is my favorite on that compilation cart, by a long shot. Worth the price of the cart all on its own.
