Most Important Aspects of a Game?

Post by slowslow325 »

What are your most important aspects of a game? Just put these in order "1" being the most important.

Graphics
Controls
Replay Value
Length
Story
Originality/Innovations
Multiplayer
Difficulty
Gameplay (in the sense of "how you play the game", not necessarily just how fun the game is)
Unlockables
Variety (like within the game, not against other games)
Worth it? (I mean, when playing the game, do you feel that it's worth it. This can also be combined with the ending of the game. Like after you beat it, did you feel that it's worth it?)

Here's mine:
1. Gameplay
2. Controls
3. Worth it?
4. Originality/Innovations
5. Length
6. Difficulty
7. Multiplayer
8. Replay Value
9. Variety
10. Unlockables
11. Graphics
12. Story

Where's the "hot chicks" option? I can't play a game that doesn't involve attractive women.

1.Controls(the game is done right then and there if it controls bad)
2.Gameplay(the only thing that really sets games apart from other entertainment)
3.Story
4.I would put music and sound here, but didn't see an option for it. So I'll say graphics
5.Originality/Innovation(much as I like originality, a game needs to get the above stuff right first)
6.Difficulty(Being too simplistic can make a game boring, too hard, frustrating)
7.Variety
8.Replay value(Not a must for a game to be great, but appreciated)
9.Unlockables(See above. I hate stupid unlockables though, like outfits and other such nonsense)
10. Hot chicks!!!(helps if they are smart too and different from the norm, like Jade from Beyond Good and Evil)

The other categories I don't really care about.

I don't think I'd ever be able to put these in a definite order that's true, for me, for every single game.

For example, I guess something like controls should be ranked high for me since bad controls can completely ruin a great game. But let's say graphics, I don't need great graphics. But really, really BAD graphics can make a game unplayable. So should I rank graphics toward the top of the list?

I think things like replay value, variety, story, etc could rank really low on my list. Replay value doesn't mean you can't completely enjoy a game the first time around, even if you never want to play it again.

I think gameplay, control, graphics and difficulty would be my biggest concern. I think gameplay has to be number one, just HAS to be. Again, I'm not concerned with graphics so much. But unlike other elements, it can ruin a game. Things like originality and unlockables won't ruin gameplay.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if the game has good gameplay, control, graphics that aren't horrible, and difficulty level(s) that don't piss me off, then every thing else doesn't matter much.

But what about other aspects of the game that aren't actually part of the user end? I'm talking about how smooth the game actually runs, if it's buggy or if it has glitches. If it has massive slow down problems. Let's say every aspect of the game is a perfect 10 out of 10, bugs can still completely ruin the game. Or, for the sake of this list, are we to assume that the game runs flawlessly (as intended)?

I was trying to avoid just putting "fun factor" as, obviously, that would be the top of everyone's list, and would include every aspect. A good game is a fun game. Since I'm asking what makes a good game, I'm asking what makes a fun game. I tried to think of all the aspects of games that could possibly make it "fun".

Replay Value
Multiplayer
Unlockables

Story

I HATE photorealism. I play games to see unique, quirky, colorful, fantasy things. I also dont care for story. I am starting to dislike even the Mario storys, of which there is none, because I want to get to the damn game.
