Light Crusader

Light Crusader is an action RPG for the Sega Mega Drive (AKA Genesis) developed by game legends, Treasure. This game received failry mixed reviews, but when I was a child and growing up, this was one of my favourite games. In fact dare I say this was the first Action-adventure/RPG I ever played. If it was not the first, it certainly was one of the first. I loved the graphics and mixture of action and puzzles.

Whilst as one of my first RPGs I loved this game, after years of finding other similar games, I realised that whilst this is not a bad game by any means, there are far better examples of the genre out there. That doesn't make this game any less special to me however. It certainly does have it's own unique features, although not always accomplished too well, it is still fairly original in its execution. Unlike many RPGS, this game does not feature multiple villages and different dungeons en route to villages. Instead this game focuses around one main village and one huge dungeon that players must work there way through. The use of magic is also very cool

I've seen this game be called "Treasure's worst game", but if anything in my opinion that mearly highlights the strengh of Treasure's games, as this is still a good game, at least it is to me.

So I was wondering what you guys' opinons are on this game? I've heard many people say they hate it, but then I've also heard people say they love it. How do you feel about it and why? For me, whilst it's obviously no where near being the best RPG the Mega Drive has to offer, I do feel it has its place.

It looks good
I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I am so mad at Black & Decker for making a vaccuum that I can't do what I want with.

Haha it took me years to complete this originally. Literally. I bought it shortly after it came out and I didn't complete it until sometime after I had bought a Dreamcast I think.

I must have been pretty crap or didn't try too hard to finish it, because I've been playing it since last night and it's really easy. I'm probably almost 3/4s of the way through already. I guess games are always easier once you've completed them once though.

I really liked Light Crusader. I was big on RPGs and I loved my Genesis so I tried most of them even if they sucked. But my faves were the usual Phantasy Star and Shining Force, then Landstalker and Light Crusader after them.

LC was pretty weird though. I mean, the music is pretty mellow and dark even at times from what I remember. It does create a mood, good or bad is up to you. The puzzles were a bit daunting at first I remember, but you get used to the style and how to work it. Being in 3/4 perspective makes jumps tough at times. I agree the magic system is fun to use. Some of the spell combinations are just plain fun, even if worthless against enemies. I'm still a fan of the game but I do think it was a little repetitive and slow at points. Only finished it twice, but I will recommend it to others as a good little Action-RPG jaunt on the Genesis.

I agree with the puzzles being daunting at first. I think that's the thing that really gave me a struggle. I'm not sure how old I was when I got it, but I must have been about 8 I would think and I really struggled with the puzzles, especially when coupled with the isometric view. Now however they seem really simple. It's been years since I've played it, but I guess I can still kind of remember vagually what I have to do for most of them.

As for the music, I agree it builds a mood and atmosphere, and I have to say I think it's mostly pretty good.
