Right, so I tested my copy of Tomb Raider on my 60GB PS3 and it works fine. I was able to save and load games. Here's some pics.

I've just moved so you'll have to excuse the mess.

The version I have is SLES-0024 the bar-code is 5032921000062. I'll do FF8 in a minute.

Yeah I've had it for a long time. It's the only PS1 game I have with a very badly damaged case. Those early double CD cases were terrible for breaking though.

The wife recently came home with the Tomb Raider collector pack thingi for PAL PS1.

Oddly enough Tomb Raider 1 and 3 work fine in my PS3 slim. Tomb Raider 2 goes black-screen on the movie that plays immediately after starting a new game, and no further.
