Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Last Hope Sega Dreamcast, really not that bad, but HARD!!

Post by claudio »

so when i first played Lase Hope for dreamcast when it came out earlier this year, i freaking hated it. i thought it was total crap.

last night i decided to give it a second chance, set it to the easiest setting (which is still freaking hard) and to find out, its actually a pretty good game.

the graphix are old school (they actually released it on a neogeo cd as well) but very well done, with some very nice effects and backgrounds. i actually appreciate it so much more than i did when i first played it, since i was expecting another release like under defeat. i guess i got spoiled with under defeat i was desensitized to Last Hope.

the gameplay is pretty nice as well, its just that its so freaking hard its frustrating, but after a while you can definitely progress. Bullets come from everywhere and its really challenging, but i guess that is what i really appreciate about it now, that instead up blowing through the game in one shot you have to go back to checkpoints, and really work to see whats next.

overall i think now that this is a underated shmup, and for all of you that hated it, give it a chance on a night you dont feel like playing anything else, its really a good old school shmup, and i very very challenging experience.

The Last Hope Crew, sorry i didnt give your game enough of a chance when you first put this out like everybody else has, you really did do a good job, you created something we dont see very often anymore, you created a very good old school style shmup.

Yeah I played it for 10 minutes and never went back. Maybe I'll try again. I also think Under Defeat spoiled me, which is my all time favorite shmup after Einhander.

whats really cool is that if you leave the game running (without starting it) you get to see some of the other stages in demo mode.

Yes, Under Defeat spoiled me so much, it is my second favorite shmup next to radiant silvergun.

I think after some time of not having and new releases you get to appreciate to lesser know games even more as you take the time to play something you havent before.

Wow -- all the love for Under Defeat, and I still haven't tried it yet...
Need to get that disc out :)

Don't suppose you'd want to write a review for it, Mozgus?

I'm also surprised to see so much love for Under Defeat here, but the game definitely deserves it. I think it was the only shmup that really caught my attention and made me try to beat it again and again, while with most shmups I just play 1 or 2 times before forgetting about them.

As for Last Hope, I guess I was also spoiled and didn't appreciate it because of that, but I guess I'll give it another try.

Maybe -- I haven't read any personally, but I guess I never went hunting for one.
Without googling, probably NTSC-uk has a decent one or something, but most sites quit covering Dreamcast stuff that late.

Edit: ok -- my curiousity got the best of me. A couple other sites did one:

But if you're happy with those bad or mediocre scores being the only ones out there, so be it :)

yeah, last hope isn't that bad...

Mars Matrix got me hooked on shmups at first... I like under defeat a lot too. but I have logged the most hours into Gradius III and IV for ps2 (by far)..

Do you have a shmup article yet? Top 20 would be cool.
