Or did Sony come out with a new revolutionary controller that has a mouse wheel and buttons and flips down to reveal a keyboard in addition to standard buttons and dual analog? I'm confused.
Today was just the Konami press release. Mostly what we saw was the news outlets showing more gameplay demos and whatnot, now that they basically had all day to play.

It's speed versus sharpshooting, basically. I'd still give the edge to mice, since the really good mice can change DPI on the fly. Even without that ability, some people have steadier hands than others while rotation speed with a stick is always more limited.
Granted I avoid FPS games on consoles, but I'm pretty sure most that I've seen some sort of auto aim option in the menus. Admittedly I have a very small number and I've seen it on PC FPS games too, right before I turn them off. :|

Duke Nukem 3D has vertical auto aim. Doom appears to, but it doesn't actually. The game's all on a single plane; the height differences are just a visual trick.

Well yes, I meant in actual 3D FPS, not raycast fakery ones like Doom and Duke.

Duke had high tech fakery. Rooms above other rooms. It was revolutionary. Nowadays the kids don't call something revolutionary unless you can push a button and your opponent's controller rumbles in such a way that it physically kicks him in the balls for having killed you.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the terms aimbot, autoaim and aimbox. All I know is that games never offer 1:1 true aim because that would be impractical.. The disembodied arms in the games have incredible rigidity and the hitbox or whatever it's called is pretty much more forgiving than real life.

Speaking of fps

You left off the end of that statement:

It'll come out in 2011 if we sacrifice enough goats to Gabe.

PC games offer 1:1 aim. You move your mouse to a point on the screen, and assuming the gun you're using is modeled to have no drift when you fire it will hit that point. How that affects other avatars in the world is dependent upon how well defined the location-based damage is. For example, in Goldeneye you would see enemies react to shots in different ways (and take different amounts of damage) depending on if you hit them in their limbs, their torso, or their head. And speaking of Goldeney, that game had a pretty high level of auto-aim. You could even see it take place. Once an enemy was close enough to the center of your view your on-screen gun would shift to center the shots on the mook's torso.
