Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Awesome sound effects that spring to mind:

The Amiga seems to me the ultimate platform for game sound.
Well it is outdated now, but back then it was top of the line by miles wasn't it. I'm glad to see we have attracted another Amiga fan.

I don't remember any game called Extase for the Amiga - SWIV was good though.

Back to the original topic, I think Diablo 1 had great sound effects. I even remember reading something about how the sound dude made that amazing hollow sound from the death sequence of those invisible enemies of the Crypt levels, which is suppose to be their skull falling onto the ground.

D2 also has nice ones (and probably superior in technicalities), but not as distinct or memorable perhaps?

The sounds in later KOF games literally doubled my enjoyment of the series. I know the noises for the blows changed a few times in the series but I'm not sure exactly where. I specifically remember 2002 on Dreamcast just sounded brutal, and I couldn't get enough of it. One time I cranked the speakers up, got to the end, and as usual got raped by Rugal. When I came out my mom commented on how it sounded like I was in a war zone. Each direct hit sounding like a bomb.

Each of the item boxes has a distinct sound and of course you had the bubble sounds for the underwater levels.
Many other levels had distinct sounds like the Casino levels and such.
Sonic CD blew me away when it was new....
Bubble sounds for the underwater levels were great. Also loved that sound when you got that shield for Sonic.

I also remember an old arcade game called StarForce. It had such a great explosion sound effect.

What I wonder is how Street Fighter got away with really whimpy and crappy sounding sound effects for so long?
Especially after SNK showed us how it _could_ sound so much better. I think it might also be some Japanese thing. Most Japanese sound effects just lack the deep thumping bass you would expect as a Westerner. Explosions in Japanese shmups suffer from the same "lack of bass"... weird. Maybe it is a cultural thing.
