If I was to get a PSP2 (highly unlikely since i got a psp1 less than a year ago), I would only want a 2nd nub. There is no real need for a touch screen or a gyro sensor or anything overly fancy like that. Sony would really benefit if they had certian emulators built-in on the PSP2 (PS1, PS2, and maybe they could make a deal with SEGA to get a few of their consoles emulated)

Also, if technology keeps increasing at this rate, the PSP4 is going to be a trasformer

OK, no PSP2 at E3, but looking at Nintendo 3DS, I don't know what the Sony guys are thinking. The 3DS is keeping up the Nintendo dominance of handhelds, and the line-up for games are VERY strong. But no release date nor launch price - but I am guessing that the 3DS could ready in late October or early November, just in time for the holidays, no need to wait until next year, right? The price, I am betting again, that it will be under USD $200 (anyone willing to pay $250 or $300 for a 3DS itself?).

So, what's Sony to do? Keeping it simple won't work at this stage. And I think the folks at Sony will need to think ahead and in different ways from Nintendo. One thing that I can argue is that the PS3 and PSP has better interaction than Wii and DS (almost none!), and the PSN is pretty good (on PS3, PSP, and PC) when compared to Nintendo's on-line shop on either Wii and DS.

3DS isn't the death bell for the PSP, however it does mean that Sony is facing a much higher mountain to climb over. So, I am guessing the Tokyo Game Show will the last chance of this year to see if Sony is coming out with the PSP2. :|

A 2tb stick? Lotta investment for portable gaming.

32gb sets you back 129 bucks, do the math for a 2tb.
That is just for the memory stick, add price of PSP2 to that.

No matter what you may think about Nintendo, they know how to price hardware. I'd guess $150-180 for the 3DS, and I'd guess closer to the $150 end (for parity with the original DS launch).

For that price, Nintendo will have to tell all retailers to clear out all of their DS and DSi/XL.

I personally saw no absolute advantage for a DSi, and kept playing on black DS lite (will get a black 3DS when it comes out!), and the DSi XL is too LARGE to carry around.

Sony can always cut their losses and keep the PSP supported for a couple of years before calling it quits. But that's still unlikely. I wonder whether any exec would even dare offer this suggestion

considering that sony's rolling out a new big marketing push for the psp, a psp2 seems pretty unlikely any time soon.

I doubt we'll see a PSP2 for quite some time, considering the handheld is at it's peak in Japan right now and has a number of big titles on the way.

If Sony is going to make a PSP2 they need to figure out a way to entice gamers to pay for their games and to use Sony's services. I think a great way to get people to buy downloaded games is to watch the price of used games. Months after release, mark the price down. Then months after that, mark the price to download down again. Unfortunately, people will probably just download the game and put on a card like the one posted in this thread. After watching DRM after DRM fail, I wonder if there is a way to force a game to only work if it's being utilized legitimately.

Another thing Sony should think about is etching out it's own market instead of competing with the 3DS. If they compete for the same market and try the same things, they will likely fail. Any market in comparison to the 3DS will be small, so they need to be careful in terms of how powerful they make the PSP2. Powerful enough to outclass the DS, but not so powerful that it's too expensive to produce given their installbase. Whatever Sony sells will likely be sold at a loss, so they need to ensure 3rd party support and sales outside of Japan.

Me :D

And, obviously the PSPs sales are going be hit hard if they do not release a new version in the same time frame as the 3ds.
For 200 dollars, you could have either:
A Brand New and hyped-up 3ds that has better graphics, thousands of DS games that the system can play, many new and exciting 3d games in the pipeline, and the ability to take 3d pictures and watch 3d movies.
OR
A PSP-3000 with one game included, hundreds of titles to choose from at the start, but not that many new A+ titles coming out soon, no 3d, no camera, and the ability to watch 2d movies.

The PSP 2 is exciting. I hope that it will be announced and be even better than the 3DS. I plan to buy both systems, just as I bought both the DS Phat and PSP 1000 and the DS Lite and PSP 2000.
