My PS2 never scratched my discs up. Nor did my original Xbox
For one, the PS2's DVD rom was one of the first released to mass market which mean it doesn't have the potential to spin as fast as the 360s. Early DVD players ran up to about 2-4x by the time PS2 was released.

As for the original xbox, the drive is about the same, so I really can't answer that one.. Of course I never wanted to pick up an original xbox while it was on as I would assume many others didn't. The original xbox was designed to only sit flat too so you probably wouldn't have as many scratched disc occurances, also the system ran most software through HDD caching meaning fewer DVD reads.

I'm just offering a different view, I don't want to start a fight. If anything I wrote is super inaccurate I will retract my comments and say sorry. :)
