Yes DVDs can be very bad, especially when used as frisbees.

Hm, that's too bad. I was hoping that I could hook up one less unit to my TV, but it would seem that there would be penalties down the road for my PS2. It's kind of ironic that it uses one of the main features that put it on top of the market so poorly.

Well, it's not really that it does anything to your machine, you're not going to kill because you played DVDs on it. It just adds wear and tear that can be avoided. Your PS2 is going to break at some point I can guarantee it. The key thing to remember is, a DVD player costs a considerable amount less than buying a replacement PS2.

Ah yes, the drive would be running more. I was thinking of the tracking angle, but not the amount of reading it would be doing. Anyway, I wouldn't use it as a DVD player except in a pinch or checking if a cranky disc that wouldn't cooperate in another player worked in other systems.

Best to avoid any unnecessary use of your disc drive and launch games from a hard disc instead.

Main reason why I put a hard drive in my PS2.

I began to hear rumors that playing DVD added too much wear-n-tear on the system. My PS2 began to have problems. DVDs would stutter or reset, particularly in the latter half of the movie.

I rememeber it started when I bought one of the Lord of the Rings movies when it came out and I could not get the PS2 to play through the full movie. At first I thought it was the disc, but then I played it on a friends DVD player and the DVD worked fine. Then other movies started having the same problem. I stopped using my PS2 for watching movies right away. I use my PS2 exclusively for games now and it works fine to this day. I haven't tried to watch a DVD in my PS2 since then.

That's just one story, so I don't know if your PS2 would have the same kind of problem over time. Mine is also one of the earlier fat models of PS2s. A lot of early adopters had their systems fail. I'm lucky mine is still working at all nearly 10 years later. The newer PS2s may have less trouble manaaging both DVDs and games, but when you can get a dedicated DVD player for less, do you really want to chance it?
My ps2 did that with DVDs after a bit. It never, and I mean NEVER gave me trouble with games, and if I still had it right now I'm sure it'd still be running like a champ.

I just figured it was a crap DVD player.
