Dreamcast disc problems

Post by powerfox »

So I've had my Dreamcast for a while and recently any disc (legit or burned) wont start. SO I tried the laser calibration trick and that seemed to work for a little while but now it's the same as before. Could this be because the laser is burnt out? Or something else? Is there any way to fix this? Any help is appreciated.

Tell us exactly what happens during the boot process.

It starts up normally but the disc doesn't spin and the laser doesn't move (at least I don't think so) and when I try to play a game it says "Please insert disk"

Try pressing down on the lid while you turn on the Dreamcast, and until [if] it loads. This happened to my friend's Dreamcast, and it turned out that it was just the disc cover not recognizing when it is closed.

I second the problem is the door. Hopefully you can re-tweak that laser back to factory.
Not sure what the factory pot ohm setting is, hope you marked the starting point.

EDIT
Hobie says it best on an older post.

Maybe that will get you close enough into tweaking range a you'll have a chance to get it going again if it hasn't already burned something else out.

hey, I bought Resi CV off ebay and the discs are in fine condition, but my DC wont recgnise either of them, it just goes straight to the setup screen. If I select it as a music disc then a message plays saying 'this is a dreamcast game', but if i click the play (controller) option then it just resets the machine. Its not the machine i think cos it is playing my other games ok, but i tried the game on my mates DC and it works fine. Any help would be appreciated cos im well confised!

Could just be an issue with the disc and that particular DC not liking it. There were apparently a lot of copies of Sonic Adventure that had issues. I got a copy that worked fine in my DC, but when I traded it to another board member it refused to work in theirs.

Just to kind of piggyback on this topic as I have a similar problem, I picked up an extra Dreamcast this afternoon at Goodwill. I figure that it's a good deal, since it was $6.99 and it came with a controller, so worst case scenario, I get an extra controller out of the deal for cheaper than it would probably cost for me to pick one up on eBay.

Anyway, when the system boots up, there isn't the usual boot-up screen. No jingle, no bouncing ball, no swirl being drawn, just the logo appearing on a white screen for a second before going into the menu screen.

Discs won't spin, so I assume that there's a problem with the drive, but that doesn't really explain to me why the boot-up screen is different.

Anyone else have this problem?

Original not CDR? Did you try lisalover1's suggestion above?

Yeah, I figured out its a problem with the lid switch. Just wondering what the easiest way to fix this is. It seems like if I just put a little bit of something on the gear there it will reach far enough to push it back when its closed.
